I remembered him having one really good postseason, but I didn't realize he had been that productive. The five year contract makes more sense given his post season history.

His offensive numbers have been fairly consistent (they're poor)

So aside from the mythical "intangibles" and "leadership" - which went out the window when he stood there after Miller got run. He's good at faceoffs and PKs well.

Sorry, we need more out of a 3rd line C than that. If he's coming back as a 4th line C he needs to make about a million less than he does now. Don't see that happening.
My point was that we has pretty much always been all of what you describe. It just seems to me that people have jumped off his bandwagon so to speak and to me he looks like pretty much the same player we've always had.

I'm on board with bringing him back.

Definitely not at a 3 million dollar cap hit though.

Jame's on the money here. Keep his cap hit the same, front load the deal. Lock him up for 3-5.

I'm more concerned with locking up Hecht. 2 years 6 million?

I'd love to keep Hecht, but I'm afraid we may not have enough space to give him that kind of money. It might have to be < 2.5 per.

And if there's a choice between Hecht and Gaustad, I think I'd keep Goose since he's a center, younger, and brings a lot of the things Hecht does to the table.

I assumed this would be the year we'd start walking away from players. Boyes definitely won't be back. Hecht and Goose are still up in the air.

These are players that have been with this team for a while now. It's an absolute shame that our organizational depth at center is so thin that we may be forced to bring both back. Hecht isn't even a center. We may be forced to bring back a winger to play center for us because of our lack of depth.

Now that the Ryan stuff is out, I really hope Darcy starts working the phones for a natural center. Even if it's a third line guy. Goose will get a raise somewhere, but it shouldn't be here.

gaustad scored 12 goals in each of the last 3 years, so i has to be considered consistent. the "problem" is, his overall play is the usual 4th liner.
well yes, he does win faceoffs, but his playing skills are lacking a lot.

i wouldnt give him more than 2M, which i consider still too much.
he would still get at least equal what other teams give their whole 4th line ...

I doubt he takes a pay cut.

My prediction: He'll be back and he'll be slightly overpaid. It's the Darcy way.

Yes, because he did that with Connolly.

I really wish the Sabres would let the season play out before making any decision like this.

If he becomes a UFA, I'm sure he would stay in Buffalo if we give him a fair deal.

What if this season ends like the last two with an early exit from the playoffs, or worse? Will we want to continue on with the likes of Gaustad and maybe some others?

I have always been a Gaustad fan but I see no reason for this right now.

If we flake out of the playoffs like we did in previous years our problems are a whole lot bigger than Paul Gaustad.

Me either. I don't think Goose brings anything irreplaceable.

Miller and his damn entourage. What next, extend Turtle? Johnny Drama? Memo to Darcy: Viking Quest is so early 90's, dude.

My point? Good question...

You mean the "best friend" that watched Miller get hammered and did nothing?

I know Miller's considers all of his Rochester alumni as close friends because they "grew up together" but if you look at the guys that reportedly were especially close to him in recent years - Peters and Lalime - deferring to Miller's friendships on roster moves seems to have promoted the retention of mediocrity in the past. Gaustad's better than those two but not untouchable just for that reason.

Yeah, sorry...not interested in retaining Goose when looking at a deal like this one for a player twice as good.

Letting Gaustad walk and signing a successor for half the money he makes would be a sign of progress. He's a dime-a-dozen player whose effort is inconsistent. Move on.

anything above 2 mill a year Id balk at and honestly he may not be worth that and I may just be basing that on sentimental value

What exactly are you basing that on?

-His mediocre faceoffs?

50% or less the last 3 years compared to Goose who has been one of the bst in the league the last few years. 57.4%, 59.8% and 57.8% this year.

-His similar offensive numbers?

He and Goose both have career points per game of .38 and goals per game of .15 for Goose and .16 for Kyle

-Or his lack of physical play compared to Goose and in general?

His hit totals the previous two seasons 69 (82gms) and 52 (80gms) compared to Goose's 115 (65gms) and 128 (81gms)

His 4 total NHL fights (thats pre/regular/post season combined) compared to Goose's 36 NHL fights

I hate to break to you and the others that love to bash Goose but his physical play and facoffs are why he makes 1mil more more than a guy like Brodziak.

Goose is going to be massively overpaid. Rupp, Talbot, Brodziak, Belanger all are better 3rd/4th line C types and all make less money.
