Great story! You really got to wonder how he wasn't picked in three drafts, even with his injury in his draft year, in any of the later rounds (there were even more rounds than there are now). But in the end, of course, that all worked out great for us, so who's gonna complain.

great read. I can't help but feel so proud of all these homegrown guys we have. I don't think I've ever loved a Rangers team as much as I do this one with this core group of guys.

Nice article.

I think it points out why he wasn't taken...he didn't have something that really stood out like a huge shot or things like that, and I think a lot of scouts look for those things in junior players. A guy who just does everything really well just makes them wonder if he can do that at the NHL level where you need to be even better

"This is going to sound really corny, but I don't really care what anyone else thinks," Girardi said. "I just think of what the organization, the fans and the players I'm playing with think of me. I just want to make sure all the guys here have faith in me, have trust in me. I just want to be out there playing my hardest every shift."

That's how a champion thinks/talks.

Great read. Hope Girardi stays a Ranger for a long time, because you can just tell the guy is a winner.

bernmeister had his way, Girardi would've been shipped out in of his 1,000 trade proposals seeing as Girardi was listed in almost every one of them.

In all fairness, to get something good you have to give something good. It's actually a compliment. I don't know if he meant it that way though.

Pajaarvi is absolutely not the guy you give Dan Girardi up for. If you're getting Ryan Suter back in whatever package then I'll listen. But not for the average players listed in past proposals.

I think at this point Girardi's play is no surprise to any of us who have seen him play for years. At this point his leadership to the very young defensive core (outside Woywitka and Eminger) is immensely important. Players like Del Zotto, Sauer and McDonagh follow Dan's example.

Not speaking of bernmeister specifically but 2 summers ago the majority of trade proposals had Girardi in them, as a cap throw in to even out salary with no value in reguard to the player requested, and there were plenty of them proposals to go around.

Just sheer stupidity. The guy should be in the ASG this year, hands down no questions asked. If Staal made it last year then Girardi should easily make it this year. The Rangers would not be where they are in the standings right now without Dan Girardi.

And exactly for the reasons that were mentioned in the article. His subtle under the radar play often makes him one of the less visible players on the ice...at least to those who aren't focusing on him. We were fortunate that he had a lacerated spleen in 2001 or he'd likely be playing somewhere else.

He was even the whipping boy for a while! Then EC came along lol. Really though people were always complaining about him a few years back.

Which isn't to say Tyutin is a bad D-man. Far from it.

To be fair, Girardi wasn't as good a few years ago as he is now. He surely had some growing pains, he had months in a row where he didn't perform at the level he probably wanted to see out of himself.

Was some of the criticism back then unwarranted? Most probably. All of it? Definitely not. I was unsure if Girardi would hold up to his bigger contract, because of his problems with consistency. I don't think anyone doubts him now. The growing years in this league has formed him into a #1 D-man.

I would advocate that while having Staal gone is of course bad for the team, but it was good for the development of Girardi personally. It has raised his mental bar for what he knows he can do. So Staal's injury hasn't just been all bad, other players have proven for others and themselves that they can handle a bigger responsibility.

People get on me when I point it out the arm chair quality of talent appraisal. I say it with affection, but nobody knows nothing. It's an old saying from the movie business. I think it applies here. Girardi is a prime example of taking a chance and hitting a home run.

I haven't loved a core to a Rangers club as much as this one since the 90's.

I loved the core of the team in the 90's with Leetch, Richter, Graves, Messier.

But that feels so long ago, I love this current group.

Hank, Cally, Girardi- 3 "most Ranger" Rangers on this team IMO

People were bashing Girardi through last year (especially two years ago after the Gaborik incident). Funny how things have changed. I've always liked him and defended him.

I've been one of his biggest critics for a long time. He's had his ups and downs every year, but always a solid top-4.

This year, however, he's playing like one of the best in the game. He's been as pretty close to flawless as you can get.

I didn't know Deveaux was one of his best friends, and was a best man in his wedding.
