Kim, Terry Pegula give $12 million to Houghton

http://www.buffalonews.com/city/comm...icle656370.ece

Quote:
Kim Kerr enjoyed her time at Houghton College.

She was a cheerleader. She played in the wind ensemble. She graduated with a degree in communications.

Now, years later, Kim Kerr is Kim Pegula, the wife of Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, and she is showing Houghton her gratitude.

The Pegulas are giving $12 million to Houghton, a small, four-year Christian college located about 65 miles southeast of Buffalo in Allegany County.

Houghton President Shirley A. Mullen made the announcement Thursday, calling the $12 million "a transformational gift in every sense of the word." The money will be used to build a new athletic complex on campus at a time when the college is expanding its number of teams and moving up to NCAA Division III athletics.

"Terry and I are very pleased to be able to give back to Houghton College where I received my education," Kim Pegula said. "We wish the college all the best as it begins its transition to NCAA Division III athletics."

That's awesome. If it was Tommy he'd want to change the name of the college.

You gotta love Pegula. A man with a ton of money but not afraid to give some away to help out other people and institutions.

I'm so happy we have an owner like him in Buffalo

It's a sort of conservative Christian school (for the spectrum of Christian colleges, it's more on the liberal end...aka not bat**** crazy fundie paradise). Nice place really. As long as you're okay with being 40 minutes from basically anywhere.

I live in Rochester now, it's amazing how much is named after him. Kinda pathetic actually.

This is ridiculous. The person donating the money doesn't usually ASK that their name gets put on something. Organizations do that as way of saying thank you.

BTG didn't ASK to have his name on the new building at NU he paid for. I'm sure he didn't ask for his name to be those buildings in Rochester that he donated money to. And I'd bet Pegula didn't ask for his name to be on the new ice arena at Penn State.

Why you people crap on BTG's philanthropic efforts is beyond me. He may not have been the greatest hockey owner, but he did a lot of good things for the area.

1) You can turn it down the naming rights. It's your money when you donate, you get to set the rules that come with it.

2) I'm not dumping on BTG's efforts. I actually like the guy (despite his mixed efforts with the Sabres), it's just about finding a balance. He confuses me sometimes. For example, he has shown a real interest in buying the Dodgers. However, he left NYS to avoid the income taxes (I applaud him for that), but now he is going to move to California, which is just as, if not worse, than NY?

Fyi, the #1 reason for donating money is tax breaks.

Almost all rich people donate money because they save more money on taxes later

Or rich people might just want to give back.

BTW, donations are not 100% deductible, not even close.

Uh, the SCHOOL decides what they're going to name a building when they get a donation like that. The donator doesn't really have any say in the matter. They can push to not have their name on it if they want, but ultimately it's up to the school.

The donor can attach any stipulations to their donation they want. It would be up to receiving party to accept or reject the terms of the donation. For example, UB recently got a $40 million donation for the medical school, the largest in the university's history from a single person, but they didn't disclose his or her name and they didn't re-name anything after him or her.

http://www.buffalonews.com/city/article564233.ece

"Long ago, he disclosed to UB that he planned to leave the bulk of his estate to the medical school. Then, he spent years cultivating a trust and relationship with the school to ensure his fortune was in good hands.

The exact dollar amount of his bequest became clearer about a year ago, Cain said. By March, his $40 million gift to UB was set -- along with the stipulation no one know his identity.

He didn't want a building named for him. He didn't want the attention on him or his family.

Otherwise, he felt it wouldn't be a gift."

What's your underlying point here? Terry Pegula is a saint because he donates to schools and has his named on buildings, but Tom Golisano isn't because he donates to schools and has his name on buildings?

Please.

Some people give money to schools and want to be anonymous. Some don't care.

There are buildings at every college in America that have a building named after someone that donated money. Why is it a big deal you that BTG has his name on buildings in Rochester? He's done a lot of good things for that area with his own money.
