McDonagh being on pace for 14 goals and 46 points really hurts. He and Subban would have been an amazing top pair for years to come.

McDonagh is miles ahead of Subban in terms of defense IMO. (I just don't think Subban is good defensively).

Offense Subban is great, but McD can still produce so gimme McDonagh.

Subban.

Not really surprised the poll is so close. You'll get a lot of typical uninformed comments about Subban's poor performance on defense like the guy above me. Actually, he's playing better defensively than offensively as of right now. This player is special, and I believe most here would take him ahead of McDonagh if they were paid to take the decision.

subban. Even though he's not having quite the offensive season like he did the previous year.

Well, he had not a good first half offensively last year either.... IIRC, he might have more pts right now than last year at the same time of the season.

He had a great last 30 games, where it matter the most.

It's an opinion. Stop getting so rattled about it.

Homer vote for McD, but it's pretty much even. Subban is sorely underrated defensively but so is McDonagh offensively.

Subban being poor defensively is your opinion, but judging by your lack of argument on the subject, it also shows how uninformed you are about his play and how flawed your evaluation is. That's my opinion.

Yup. As was said before, he's on pace for 14 goals and 46 points. That's still really good.

People think Subban is bad defensivley because this season (more than last) he's making a few mistakes here and there. Everyone doesn't realize he is the main man on defense and doesn't have Markov back yet. Subban, Gorges, Gill is all we got right now and Subban has been playing tremendously offensivly (generating plays, he doesn't have to score...) and playing well defensively.

Subban has been better defensively than offensively this year. Anyway, it's a painful poll, just because we should have had both of them. Arggh. I think Subban's skill level gives him the upside to be the better player overall. He has to get a bit more serious about some things though, he's still playing too stupid at times, taking bad penalties, diving, some of that stuff takes away from his ability to play good defense and from his abundant overall talent. McDonagh would be such a great fit for the Habs looking forward. Aarggh again.

So you want him to vote based on one game? McDonagh is definitely better than Subban defensively and it shouldn't even be an argument.

Give me PK offensively and McD defensively.

That would make a perfect d-man, really. This may turn out differently in a few years depending on how both continue to develop. McDonagh has been developing at an exponential level, so it should be fun to watch.

I would probably take Subban by a tiny amount right now if I had to choose, though. Luckily, we have one of them and don't have to make that choice. Thanks, Montreal!

McDonagh is much better defensively than Subban. Not to mention he is producing more offensively this season than PK.

McDonagh no question.

They're similar. Suter is more finesse, McDonagh is more engaged physically.

Both have jaw-dropping skating ability.

Yeah that's true. Everyone on the Rangers looked off lol. But in reality, Subban is one of those players that you know is something special and when I say special more special than McDonagh. Subby has the ability to be like Doughty (even though doughty is playing like doughty now) Watch both of Subban and Doughty play and they are very similar.

OMFG when will the day come that people get that Subban is actually good at playing defense. It never ceases to amaze me all the know nothing know it alls coming out of the woodwork on every Subban related thread to harp on how he isn't good at D.

HE IS GOOD AT D

He's our second best defensive D after Gorges who is amazing at it and he plays 1st unit PK on one of the top PK units in the league right now. He's doing this under the tutelage of one of the most defensive minded coaches in the league. Think he has him out there in any and all key situations if he's not very good at defense. No. Didn't think so.

As for the poll...Subban easily. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love McDo on the team though. #%$@% Gomez

Sheesh.

So McDonagh is off to a hot start. Great. Remember how big a deal Ranger fans made of Del Zotto? Let s wait a little bit before crowning McDonagh a perennial All Star.

And I love this obviously unquantifiable "plays against Ovechkin, Crosby, etc" comment Ranger fans always throw out there for their defenseman, especially Staal. So what he plays against them? Or the "he has to shut down ..." I mean come on. So does every top pairing defenseman in the East. I mean its not like the Rangers have had any success against the Pens, or Caps, so why is Staal getting credit for shutting them down? Crosby has a ton of goals against Lundqvist, more than any other player I believe. Is Staal really "shutting him down". Same with Ovechkin, who was over a PPG against NYR in the playoffs. Not to mention the series wasnt even close. So what exactly did Staal do? But yea, its easy to throw out unquantifiable compliments like "shutdown defenseman" and what not, but given the Rangers lack of success, its obvious he isnt doing as well shutting these guys down as Ranger fans make it out to be.
