This is turning into one of the saddest stories in hockey today. If you look at his career stats, they are actually not that bad. He is now at .5 points per game, but so is Blake Comeau... I dunno.
$625k cap hit and then a UFA at the end of this year, pro-rated and he is practically free. He is a left winger too and has had success with us before. I know Dean wouldn't do it, but it kind of makes you wish that we give him one last shot. We don't have the room on the top 6 though which means he will just be in Murray's doghouse the whole season though. Very sad state of affairs.
When he was sent to the AHL last year he put up very healthy numbers (19 goals, 48 points, in 36 games). He is just a top 6 guy or bust. The last time he was successful was when he played on our top 6, ever since then he has dropped to bottom 6 duties and has failed.
He still has shootout ability. He was the Yotes' first shooter:

Poor guy. Just rewatched his highlights as a King. Forgot how good he was.
I think he is still the same player we traded. He has a sparkling history of health. He performs on command at the AHL as a first line winger, but when he gets to the NHL he just can't handle playing a gritty bottom 6 game and can't seem to earn his way back to playing in a productive role. Yotes fans tell me that he didn't play on their top 6, but he did receive powerplay time, though the Yotes powerplay is 29th in the league. The Wild and the Canes both had him in their bottom 6 and when he played top 6 minutes with Edmonton they were the worst team in hockey.
If I were Dean, I would claim him. At the very least, I would put him in Manchester, he is above a PPG player in the AHL and Manchester is struggling offensively. Kozun has taken a step back, Vey is performing alright, but at a rookie pace, and Nolan is tied for the scoring lead... They could use a boost.
No thank you. How many teams has he been on in the last 12 months? He just can't mentally handle the NHL. Nothing is going to help that. Sure, he may have some skill, but getting waived a ton of times doesn't help ones confidence. He maybe great in the AHL, but so was Rosa.
Have to remember how waivers work. If LA picks him up he has to be on pro roster for 30 days. After that if LA puts him on waivers Phoenix gets the first claim. The Odds the he'd end up in Manchester is slim to none on waivers.
Edit: ... and assuming that it is true, was he being waived to be sent to the AHL or for his outright release?
Does that matter? The point is he's being waived to get him off the NHL roster. So for all his supposed mad skill and talent, he's NOT an NHL player. Not sure why some people here still want to claim him. Geez.
O'Sullivan is like an ex-girlfriend you broke up with a few years ago. Looking back, you find yourself sometimes remembering the goods times, while overlooking the reasons you split. Caught in that moment, you forget that the good times were actually few and far between, and the rest was pretty much pure misery, especially the end.

It does matter. There is a big difference if Phoenix is giving up on him entirely and releasing him vs sending him to the AHL where he could at least work on his deficiencies. He's not so old that it's unlikely that he'll ever come around.
