Three Stars : Game 25 12/4/11 : Det 2 @ Col 4

Doing things a bit different this year. When the Wings win, we'll pick 5 stars and assign 5 points for the 1st star, 4 points for 2nd star, etc. When the Wings lose, we'll pick 3 stars with 3 points going to the 1st star, 2 points for the 2nd star, etc.. This (theoretically) helps solve the problem of the best player in an awful losing effort getting the same credit as the best player in a 15-0 blowout masterpiece.

Vote for your stars, argue, banter, lobby, vociferate, etc, and we'll keep the tally going all year. Post your choices in the thread and most #1s will be used to break ties - if you don't post your rankings, I won't be able to determine who you thought was 1st star and I'll decide myself (and I know you don't want that...). Write-ins count too, so feel free to write-in and then drum up your picks.

Mini-Standings through game 24:
Howard 50 pts
Filppula 43 pts
Datsyuk 34 pts
Franzen 29 pts
Lidstrom 16 pts

Lidstrom's offense is still strong, but boy does his defensive play get ugly/embarrassing some nights. Like this one.

Zetterberg was the only wing who actually realized where the opposition's net was and went their consistently.

imo, lidstrom is not any worse than last season when he (undeservedly) won the norris.

generally looks better this season, b/c he is not spending as much time in the defensive zone b/c he playing with a faster skating puck mover and F's are playing better D.

howard is also making more saves, so defensive mistakes by all players are noticed less.

Lidstrom should not have won a Norris last year. And it shows how little people actually pay attention to the game when they talk about him like he should be considered again.

He looked futile defensively on several occasions tonight.

Dats, Hank, Mule sounds pretty good to me.
Not altogether sold on Mule today. But nobody from the defense looked especially good.

Both of you are unintentionally making a great case for how little respect goaltending gets. Is Howard making more saves? Or is the team playing better defensively? To me the Wings have looked considerably better in their own end as a team, and Howard seems to be playing better as well. I'm not certain how much overlap there is there. But Lidstrom has been excellent this season; if you think otherwise you can go root for the Leafs and chant "Kessel for Hart" or maybe "Phaneuf for Norris" because those two are definitely defensively responsible players.

Anyways...

Mule - I'd like to go Howard as a write in, but he didn't see any ice time.

He also had a damn good defensive play in the first. Something he apparently doesn't do.

There's a reason he wasn't on the PK last year, and it's not to "save his energy". It's because PKing for a defenseman is 95% shot blocking and net coverage, and he's slipping in those areas the last couple seasons. He often gets outmuscled for pucks in front of the net and he doesn't have the same awareness in-zone as he used to. He's getting caught with his head turned the wrong way, he loses the puck and/or his man on a fairly regular basis, etc, and that NEVER used to happen.

That's not to say he's atrocious - he's not. His offense is still a huge plus and he is still very good at defending in the neutral zone and playing away from the net. But when the puck gets in deep on the cycle, teams are exploiting him in front of the net where he's weak. That'd be why he's best kept off the PK.
