TSN: New Four Conference Format Next Year

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=382065

Quote:
The existing Northeast division would be expanded to include the league's two Florida-based teams, making a conference of: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Meanwhile, the existing Atlantic Division would gain two teams for a seven-team conference including: Carolina, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The Central Division would be modified to form a conference of Mid-Western teams including: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg.

The three Canadian teams from the Northwest Division would join a proposed Western Conference including: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

Crazy shakeup. Adding Vancouver and Edmonton to an already stacked Pacific is going to be another heavy set of games for the Kings

4 teams make the playoffs in each conference. Brutal.

This conference and the Pittsburgh one seem crazy stacked. But Im not entirely opposed to it while looking at other options. No agreement probably could be made with Winnipeg to West for who known. And this will end up being a 7 team conference. Ill guess that Phoenix moves up north and goes to divsion with the NE teams and FLA or TB move down

I guess they just wanted to end the East vs. West debate.

And they are not called divisions. It is 4 conferences.

Still don't understand why there isn't more teams in the eastern time zone together. Colombus and Detroit should be split in the other conferences and Phoenix should move to the "central" conference.

I'm sad Dallas is leaving. I wonder when HFboards are going to redo the site.

In the new format, Kings wouldn't sniff the playoffs.
oh, each conference? Jebus... nevermind. O_o

So the first two rounds of the playoffs will be in your "conference" which will breed brutal rivalries. I like that a lot. It sucks that we are in an 8 team conference but if Phoenix gets moved to Quebec we're down to 7, which is (likely) something to look forward to. Feels like our conference is, outside of Calgary, pretty damn good. Edmonton and Colorado are on their way up with some good young talent and SJ/Van are Western powerhouses.

Also cool is potentially playing an eastern team in the third round.

Overall I think I like it.

Before next season starts.

Wonder how many games the Kings will play against Dallas now. Probably only 4.

Interesting thoughts via Bob McKenzie

Quote:
Anyone who remembers the NHL with divisional playoffs knows the pros and cons of this new/old format.

Pros: Intense playoff rivalries that happen year after year with great regularity. Think NYR-NYI, NYR-NJD, NYI-WSH or CGY-EDM, BOS-MTL etc.

Cons: 5th place team in a "stronger" conference misses playoffs and 4th place team in a "weaker" conference makes it.

Cons: Two of the NHL's elite teams, maybe the top two overall, could conceivably meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

My own view: New 4 conference format GREAT for regular season play. I am not big fan of it, though, because of new (old) playoff format.
And Philadelphia/Washington/etc conference is pretty tough. Didn't even notice how massive that conference is. But I think they are not too far off from ours when you consider only 2 teams from their conference is a non-playoff team, when ours is like 3? Edmonton in a year or 2 is going to be incredible.

I do like the idea of upping the odds for more geographically close playoffs. Definitely makes it pretty exciting. Alwyas wnated a Kings/Ducks playoff series. Could do wonders for Socal Hockey

I agree on the rivalries. This is actually pretty dang good for a setup.

3 Canadian teams in our conference = 9 less games on television.

Teams will play teams within their conference six times - 3 home, 3 away. Home and home with everyone else.

That sucks. . Kings will only be in Dallas once per season.

i like it. for the first time in a long time the league did was right. they could have taken the easy route and just swapped WPG and DET. this totally re-writes the landscape and will reduce travel, not by much in all likelihood but anything helps.

this will create, intensify and tighten up the games within the 4 conferences even further. the first two rounds of the playoffs within those conferences will i think just increase the pucker factor come playoff time.

the western? pacific? smythe? conference is going to be just brutal. in the end though that means LA will have to field a damn good team every year if they hope to compete, let alone advance.

i say tag the old division and conference names on this and let's run with it. LA is back in the Smythe and Campbell conference.....what was old is new again

It really looks like they're setting this up so Phoenix can move to one of those "Eastern" conferences.

Overall, I like this. I think it will be amazing watching the teams battle it out in the Kings' conference for the four playoff spots. It would be interesting playing the Wings in the finals, too.

From what I understand the 4 conference winners will be seated by points. So the SCF could be habs vs pens.

It can't be like that, can it? Wouldn't it be an east vs west final like it has been?

The determination of the Conference Finals match up has yet to be determined by the Board of Governors. They'll make that decision when they meet later during the season.

And apparently, the league is prepared to expand to two teams in the future to even out all Conferences.

If Phoenix moves to Quebec, the league could look to add another team in Ontario to give the two Eastern based Conferences 8 teams.

I love the new playoff format.

Talk about brewing on heated rivalries.

Let's say we make the playoffs....and have to play San Jose and Vancouver to win out of our conference. MAN awesome.

and what about in the Central...

Chicago playing Detroit..or Detroit St. Louis...really going to make for some heated playoff series.
