4 Divisions next year

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=382065

The existing Northeast division would be expanded to include the league's two Florida-based teams, making a conference of: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Meanwhile, the existing Atlantic Division would gain two teams for a seven-team conference including: Carolina, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The Central Division would be modified to form a conference of Mid-Western teams including: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg.

The three Canadian teams from the Northwest Division would join a proposed Western Conference including: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

looks awesome. hopefully, like some are saying, it will promote bigger rivalries, especially during PO's.
Excited for some change mostly!

Looks good to me.

I'm sure some GM's are less happy because they'll be spending more time playing better teams but you gotta do what you gotta to do make the league as strong as possible.

I wonder if they needed a percentage of votes to pass it, something like 60% or 70% of the GM's had to say yes.

I think it was 20 votes.

New Conferences:

East 1:
Boston-25 GP, 17-7-1, 35 PTS
Florida-26 GP, 14-8-4, 32 PTS
Toronto-27 GP, 15-10-2 32 PTS
Buffalo-26 GP, 14-11-1, 29 PTS
-------
Ottawa- 26 GP, 12-11-3, 27 PTS
Montreal- 27 GP, 11-11-5, 27 PTS
Tampa Bay- 25 GP, 11-12-2, 24 PTS

At least now we are fighting with 7 teamrs to make the playoffs instead of 15.
Its a race to the top 4 out of 7.
We could make it. But the fact is, we will REALLY need to build up.

Because first round of the playoff will be inter-division. No free pass against pittsburgh, washington and teams without goons and tough boys. Toronto-Ottawa-Boston are really tough.

They should have added TBay and Florida to the Pittsburgh-Philly division so that they will travel by plane too once in a while. Makes no sense that this division ends up being so advantaged again.

They're actually 4 conferences, not 4 divisions. I'm not sure how I feel about it though... Seems a little bit odd.

East 1: New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Carolina and Washington

I think they all have playoff spots lock.
Carolina is going anywhere, Devils are ****. And Islanders are terrible.

+

They say that Phoenix is going to be move to Quebec this spring. So that means, MTL will be in the 8 teams division, soon as next year!

Well, the Rangers are pretty awful, but they do have Lundqvist, so that's a leg up over the others.

There's a giant glaring flaw here...

A team that's in 5th place in one conference who won't make the playoffs could have more points than a 4th place team in another conference that does make the playoffs. Makes no sense.

Give us no conferences, but keep the new schedule format. The top 16 teams move on, and that's that. Think of the possibilites. A Habs/Leafs final, or a Vancouver/Chicago final.

Give us no conferences, and make the schedule geographically friendly. Think of the possibilites. A Habs/Leafs final, or a Vancouver/Chicago final.
How is that any different from any past year where the 8th place team in the EAST has less points than the the 9th place team in the WEST? It happened with the Flames a few seasons back.*
I wouldnt mind no conferences. though.

I don't mind the conferences, but I simply hate the playoffs' format. First two rounds within the division? They have officially lost their mind, going back to the old divisions' format...

what I wonder is, will the match schedules be different, or just randomized like now?

Will the playoff structure be any different?

Well... it was like this.

But it's just that... It has more chances to happen under the new system.

I think it happens nearly every year TBH.

It just will appear more because there is more conferences.

Thats going to happen (i'll check tomorrow)much more often, possibly with several cases in one year, with larger points difference.

And dont you find stupid that the divisional standings will be the only thing deciding of your presence in PO whereas more than half of the games will be played outside of that division ?

Yes, but it ensures an even number of teams from each geographic area, allowing each area to "sucesfully" show playoff hockey to their prime demographic kids/ adults.

makes perfect business sense to me

As long as they go back to the old playoff formula, I'll be fine with it.

- Conference Semi-Finals
- Conference Championships
- Eastern/Western Championships
- East vs West Stanley Cup Final

You should be thankful that they gave us the Florida teams. Adding Detroit and Chicago to our conference would look really really nice on paper.

However, we would be assured of not winning another Cup for 18 more years or at least as long as Holland is the GM in Detroit.

One problem. There is not an "East" or a "West" with this alignment. Simply 4 Conferences without a designation of who plays whom in the semis. It will all be based on the conference winner's regular season record.
