NHL Radical Realignment Approved

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=604852

If the Coyotes are still here next season then the new division will be.

* Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Colorado

BTW I feel sorry for Tampa Bay and Florida since the NHL screwed them out of having an all southern division and have a division with all of the Canada teams in it.

I don't mind it too much. Hopefully we will have an owner, the travel budget will have to go up.

This is going to be a tough conference next year if only 4 teams get in the playoffs. Vancouver, San Jose, and LA are all Cup Contenders on paper. Colorado and Edmonton will only get better. Calgary is going to have to rebuild whether Feaster wants to or not.

At least a Dallas team getting better wont be in it.

MLB has a better setup going into 2013.

Making the playoffs just got a lot harder imo.

I'm not sure what to think of this. The already insanely competitive west gains another up and coming team, but if you look at the immediate future anyway, we stack up pretty good to make the playoffs regularly with that proposed playoff seeding. You're really only competing with 7 other teams instead of 14 under that format.

I can't see that playoff format sticking around for long though. Teams and fans will be crying bloody murder as soon as their team finishes 5th in a conference where the other conference has a team in 4th with less points. I get what they're trying to do there, but they will go back to a 1-8 seeded format pretty quick I think.

Why mess with the playoffs? It's the best thing the NHL had going for it.
Just switch a few teams conference and change the scheduling without changing the seeding. I don't see why they need some weird conference alignment to go with it.

I would have done this:

The division where the Coyotes are in are fine for me.

Others:
Dal StL Nashville Washington Carolina Tampa Bay Florida

Winnipeg Chicago Detroit Columbus Buffalo Toronto Ottawa Minnesota

Pitt Phil Rangers Devils Islanders Boston Montreal

Man, the Governers must hate florida... I don't mind it, I am glad that Dallas is no longer in our conference. Never was quite sure why they were in the pacific division. The playoffs should be interesting though. New matchup possibilities in the stanley cup finals. I would have preferred to go to a baseball style system, but oh well.

I don't like it because every season their is an inevitable very week division/ conference. Under this system a weak conference has equally as much weight as a stronger conference.

Florida and Tampa will love that division. Lots of snowbirds head to Florida during the winter and playing in a division with the Canadian teams makes perfect sense.

And I'm sure the players in Montreal, Buffalo, Toronto, Boston, etc. won't mind a little trip to 70 degree weather in December.

What does this mean for the 'Yotes? It seems odd that they would announce this now while we may move for the next season. I can't believe we are still ownerless.

Yes, but the travel cost for the florida teams is going to be extreme. Xtreme!

I'm sure they have a contingency plan. But they did need to do something with the Peg/Det. I just don't like this something

how? the travel -yes. those teams already had an easy travel schedule anyway. but the competition is pretty tough. unfortunately the devils will probably be on the outs more often than not in the next few years but i like it anyway.

To put into perspective how badly a team could get screwed by missing the playoffs, if we went by last year's point totals the Kings would have missed the playoffs even though they had more points than the Stars and Blackhawks and those two would both get in.

Also, thinking more about the Florida teams. I don't really feel much sympathy because everybody in the league will be traveling more since every team in the league will have a home-and-home. Plus, think about it, Phoenix is still quite far from Western Canada. It's still pretty stupid and obviously a political move to keep the Flyers/Rangers/Penguins together and add the Capitals to the mix. NBC is only going to show 4 teams now.

You're also playing against your own conference 42 out of 82 games. You have plenty of chances to grab points against the teams that matter in the long run.

Good luck in the future!

Is Definitely the toughest of the 4 IMO.

Glad we're not apart of it!

As it stands, I'm not a fan but if they made these changes I think it'd be pretty good actually.

1) Make division "A" and division "B" the "Western" conference
2) Make division "C" and division "D" the "Eastern" conference
3) Move Columbus to division "C" so both conferences have 15 teams
4) Division winners get division title and home ice throughout the playoffs until they run into another division winner in which case the team with the highest points will hold the tiebreaker
5) Remaining playoff teams determined by top 6 in points in the conference (i.e. top 6 in West and top 6 in East) regardless of their standing in their particular division
6) Playoffs are reseeded each round with division winners placed in different brackets while applicable

Do it!!

I'm fine with that. Especially #5.

Though Ideally I'd just blow up the conferences entirely and just have a 'regional' schedule. Then seed playoffs by 1-16.

I love the new conferences. More chances to take the 3 hour flight from Edmonton to Phoenix and watch cheap hockey. Love the arena and the surrounding area.

That is the reason Phoenix is with Edmonton and Calgary, and the same reason both Florida is with the Eastern Canadian teams. We are big draws in those cities. At the Nov 5th game at least half the crowd in Phoenix was cheering for Edmonton, heck I saw a dozen Flames fans patrolling the main concourse.

My buddies and I are going to make it a yearly trip.

US Customs asked me the reason for my trip:

"Hockey (Yotes 4 Oil 2), Football (Cards 19, Rams 13 in OT), Golf (I wont go there). In that order."

(I adopted the Cardinals as my NFL team after that weekend, and they are 4-1 since. Got Kurt? bah, need more Peterson)
