There goes any remote possibility of us getting Ryan from the _ucks. I know it was highly unlikely anyway. I really like the new divisions and playoff formats. I remember watching the Detroit vs Colorado battles just a few years back but that fizzled out because they stopped playing each other so much. This brings the opportunity for so many more rivalries like that. There was talk in one of the GDT's about Quick getting in a fight within a couple years. This just might make that a reality if we can get a good rivalry going with someone.

But we also lose Chicago which we can never beat so it evens out.

I would like to see it too, but I'd bet on an NHL franchise in Jamaica before that happens.

Can't remember who pointed this out or where I read this but someone made a good point about trades. If you want to make a trade outside your conference there are now 22 or 23 teams to deal with instead of 15. Should make for some interesting player movement.

There's talk of using more current players for the conference names. Orr, Lemieux, Gretyzky, etc.

What would you guys think of the Kings playing in the Gretzky Conference?

Fitting considering his best years were with the Oilers(mostly) and the Kings.

This means ill be at less home games. Cant stand going to any game vs. a canadian team. Their fanbases taking over staples center pisses me off to no end...

NO! Too soon for Gretzky or Lemieux IMO.

I think that's a terrible idea personally.

Found this map helpful. It's interesting how they split up Conference C with the Florida teams. I wonder if it's to preserve certain rivalries in the NE.

Probably been asked in the thread already, but didn't have time to read all pages....don't the teams in the 7-team conferences have an advantage to getting into the playoffs?

They need to implement a "wildcard" system that evens this out and potentially allows a 5th team in one of the 8-team conferences to supplant a 4th team in one of the 7-team conferences based on record.

Teams that start in Europe should get a bye into the first round of the playoffs.

No system is going to be flawless. I don't think the 8 team versus 7 team conferences is much of a disadvantage. What if the 4th place team in the 8 team conference is worst than the 5th place team in the 7 team conference? Should the 8 team conference only get 3 teams into the playoffs? There will always be teams that end up in stronger conferences, the West has been stronger overall than the East for a while and you still have 8 teams from each conference.

As compared to now, when it's a given that the Kings will never make it out of the conference semifinals... wait, that's exactly the same number of playoff rounds. *headdesk*

A "what if" look at the new conferences as applied to last year's standings. I'm not saying it will happen to us, but it's interesting to see that last year we would have been the only team not to make it in this new system...even having more points than Dallas and Chicago:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=605002

Quote:
But all of that won't take effect until next season. So what would the standings have looked like at the end of last season if the new system was already implemented? Let's take a look:

Conference A
x-Vancouver 117
x-San Jose 105
x-Anaheim 99
x-Phoenix 99
Los Angeles 98
Calgary 94
Colorado 68
Edmonton 62

Conference B
x-Detroit 104
x-Nashville 99
x-Chicago 97
x-Dallas 95
St. Louis 87
Minnesota 86
Columbus 81
Winnipeg 80

Conference C
x-Boston 103
x-Tampa Bay 103
x-Montreal 96
x-Buffalo 96
Toronto 85
Ottawa 74
Florida 72

Conference D
x-Washington 107
x-Pittsburgh 106
x-Philadelphia 106
x-N.Y. Rangers 93
Carolina 91
New Jersey 81
N.Y. Islanders 74

In the new format, teams will play about half of their games within their conferences, so this is obviously not how the points would have been distributed. But it's fun to see how everything would shake out.

Only one team that reached the postseason under the old format would be left out in the new one. The Los Angeles Kings and their 98 points would be bounced in favor of the Dallas Stars, who had 95 points but would have finished fourth in their conference.

I remember those seasons a few years back where the Kings were playing teams in the division *8* times and playing teams in the east at home once every 3 years.

God did that ever suck.

Unfortunately you can't project how teams would have done because it's not apples to apples. For example the Kings would have only played Chicago twice in the new format. They played them 4 times in the old (and lost all 4).

Yeah, the article addresses that, but it's an interesting "what if". The points would be distributed differently, and I think it would have been in our favor. I just hope we're not in this situation after next season or I'd be pissed! I'm sure it's bound to happen to a team here or there. I guess the take home message is the same: just keep playing better.

Have you guys seen this yet? It's pretty interesting seeing how the travel looks for all the teams. Also, check out the average distance for East 2 Conference, they've got it rough.

This is why the teams like the Rangers, Devils, Flyers, etc. should be forced to do the European trips at the beginning of the season.

I know AEG won't go for it though.
