Damn.

Will this hurt the Frozen Four in Tampa? Because UAH is the "host school" for it.

Shame to see it go. Who has been the best player to come out of that school? Only one I can think of is Jared Ross. I looked through the names, and none jumped out at me.

No.

Majik: Cam Talbot was a standout goalie at UAH that signed with the NYR organization a few years back. He played two years with their AHL affiliate, before going down to the ECHL. I think he's back in the "A" this year.

As for UAH's situation, I think it doesn't bode well for college hockey as a whole (just my personal opinion). But the writing was certainly on the wall when the CHA folded and the CCHA refused to admit them. Sad? yes. Surprised? no.

Not surprising. The Badgers hosted them here in Madison last season and as pathetic as the Badgers were, they still blew out Alabama-Huntsville like they were a highschool team.

its definitely going to hurt college hockey, other potential expansion schools might use this as an excuse not to bring their program up to div1, sad to see but you need the school to stand behind the program for it to succeed and sounds like they didn't have that (on the administration level)

With the Thrashers moving and this, hockey in the south just took a big hit.

Disappointing news, though not really shocking. Kinda guessed that their finances weren't exactly stable due to their relative isolation from the rest of the collegiate hockey landscape and the fact that Alabama isn't exactly known as a hockey market.

Still sad to hear, though.

Finances were NOT the problem. In fact, they offered a few years ago to pay to have teams travel to Alabama just like the Alaska schools do, but the CCHA rejected their application to the league (concern among member schools with their stability without the additional burden).

Reading further into the Huntsville situation, it seems the UA-System Chancellor had a personal vendetta against Huntsville since they don't play football (Hockey WAS their football program), and shut them down while he had the chance.

There has been discussion on USCHO regarding the cold shoulder the leagues gave UAH a few years back, but upon reading the latest, a league or not wouldn't have stopped Portera from shuttering the hockey program.

Also... a group of hockey boosters had approached the University, with enough money to pay for the program, including covering any losses for the next three to five years. Portera told them their money wasn't good enough.

Eh, don't know their situation personally, but find it hard to believe that a hockey program would be axed just because of personal vendetta. Successful athletics programs are few and far between for the most part, even in the so-called money sports of football and basketball, so if money honestly wasn't the issue I really don't see a personal grievance as being a likely possibility for its death.

Some good news on the UAH front

It looks like the program may be saved after all. At least the first step in the right direction has taken place.

You can read all about it HERE.
