Punched Out: The Life and Death of a Hockey Enforcer (NYTimes video series on Boogey)

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...ard-video.html

This just went live, so I haven't seen the whole thing yet, but it seems very professional and very interesting. Surprised to see the Times taking this much of an interest. Parts 2 and 3 posted in the next 2 days.

Expertly produced. Pronunciation is throwing me off; I've always pronounced it Boo-Gard, but they're pronouncing it Beau-Gard.

My favorite picture from the video:

Can't wait to see the next episode, but I have a feeling it's gonna get really sad.

They're pronouncing it the way it's supposed to be pronounced, I believe.

IIRC, he changed the pronounciation in the media guides and all that after fans kept calling him BOO-Gaard and the "BOOOgey" chants.

Make sure to read the companion article, too. Really good stuff.

Looks like Part 2 is up.

Just watched the whole thing...

Wow. It starts out and you get all the happy memories of Boogaard just being this awesome enforcer... then it gets into the really sad/scary details. really powerful series.

Bettman kind of looks like an ass in Part 3, the way he's denying the research. Partially probably the editing, because it's pretty obvious where the NYT comes down on the issue, but still.

I don't know if I'd say it's time to start giving suspensions for fights, but they certainly need to look into how they can get deemphasize the choreographed, premeditated ones.

On top of that, there is an accompanied writeup that was published today.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/06/sp...going-bad.html

Quote:
From the outside, everything seemed normal. It was not.

“His demeanor, his personality, it just left him,” John Scott, a Wild teammate, said. “He didn’t have a personality anymore. He just was kind of — a blank face.”

Boogaard fell asleep while playing cards on the team plane, a teammate said. He passed out in corners of the team’s dressing room. He was uncharacteristically late for meetings and workouts. Wild trainers and doctors warned Boogaard’s teammates not to give him their prescription pills.
The second page had a lot of interesting notes that happened in Minny. Good read.

My best idea would be if they circle for more than 5-10 seconds, game misconduct. IMO a fight should happen for a reason and happen quickly.

I just can't stomach the thought of fighting anymore. It's really heartbreaking.

These videos are very sad, I didn't know how many concussions he had possibly received before getting to the NHL. I don't think fighting will ever go away in the NHL though because of the culture.

It really scares me what they have recently found out about the possible brain damage that can occur from some of the normal hits in hockey. I think most guys have had their bell rung at least once in their career due to hitting or being hit.

GTFO

There's been a few pieces in the Times covering Boogaard's junior career and life in general.

Just saw this, very touching, very well done articles and videos. Provides quite a lot of insight into his life.

As an addendum to the NY Times article, the Strib Editorial Board wrote an opinion piece on how Boogaard's death should spur the NHL to stop fighting.

Dan (firstroundbust) also wrote a similar piece on the other end of the spectrum yesterday. Thoughts?

I don't see a change anytime soon. Fighting can and does change the momentum in games. Emotions also run high in games and things are going to happen. IMO it will always be a part of the game, but I don't know if players that are strictly there to fight and be enforcers will always be around. Players like that seem kind of like a liability with the high PIM and low skill level.
