The Fourth Period: Canadiens considering shakeup?

As per Pagnotta's twitter feed and website (TheFourthPeriod.com) there is a major shakeup looming and it might mean Martin, Gauthier and Gainey out the door.

Still not on the 'fire everybody' bandwagon (and frankly, I don't trust the 4th period) but Jim Nill as GM? That's the type of move I'd like to see if we're gonna clean house.

Bring back Gainey!!!

Nill would be great, but I don't think he speaks french(I don't care) but I'm not sure it's possible unless Molson puts his foot down. Anyways the GM speaks to the media 3-4 times a year not after every game like the coach, french or not for the GM isn't a big issue IMO

Awards:
Roy/Nill as coach and GM would be exciting, to say the least. Not a clue if it would translate into on-ice results, but it would be a hell of a shakeup.

TFP has never once gotten anything right about the habs or for anything else.

If he's right it could be a huge boost to his website.

I agree.

Nill would be a good outside-the-box choice.

This. Not in agreement with the annihilation of management yet, but if it's to happen, do it right.

Would love Nill here, but it won't happen.

I would be in favor of this move but don't see it happening.

I would like this, but I don't think this new deserve any consideration. Molson will never hire a GM or coach that doesn't speak french so...

Doubt Nill leaves detroit, but he'd be among my first choices to replace Gauthier. AT the very least, it be nice if they actually did some due diligence when hiring a GM (instead of giving it to the first guy with a foot in the door). Not saying I'd blow everything up yet, but I personally feel that it be nice if they actually interviewed people instead of having everything decided beforehand. As for Roy, I'm not crazy about it, but it would be interesting to go from a coach with no emotion to a coach that's all emotion.

Considering that Molson just came out and said he trusts his management yesterday, I doubt anyone in management gets moved.

If any change happens, it will be a coaching one first.

TFP is just looking for hits much like Eklund does.

I think before Gauthier goes anywhere he will fire Martin as he wasn't his hire and get another coach.

I don't have a hate on for JM but they nmeed somebody behind the bench with more energy, head coach or assistant. Push Ladouceur or Cunneyworth to the press box and get somebody with energy.

In other news, ice hockey is played on ice, most NHL players currently have two legs, and the team with the most goals scored in a game usually wins that game.

I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find many articles that say the same thing.

I'm not sure an article like this qualifies as news. More like throwing more burning logs into a fire.

When there's a change, then it's news. Until then, the sun will come out tomorrow and people will still complain, no matter what.

If there is a change in management, I hope it comes with the intent of an actual rebuild and not more of the same window dressing moves that we've seen over the years.

I think its a bigger deal that he had to say that then he said it. For all we know, he may have said that to encourage organizational stability. All I know is he inherited Gauthier, Martin and Gainey on the team. He may consider a change that he approved of.

The first thing Nill would say is that he cannot build a team with Gomez taking up 7 mill in cap space, demand he get buried or moved and the conversations would end there.

Looks like a pretty typical "struggling team loses to last team in league" piece. Two things intrigue me about it though.

First, only the anglophone, non-Montreal sports media seems to be envisioning a major cleanup being imminent. Local media seem a lot more subdued, mostly just questioning whether it might be possible rather than intimate it is being considered, and at least one (Gagnon) writing outright that he thinks Martin will last the year. Regardless of who might be right, I find the disconnect interesting.

Second, it's the first article to present a credible alternative to Gauthier in Jim Nill. No credible coaching alternatives, though. And it offers up Gallant and Carlyle as possibilities to replace Martin. I find it interesting that the author apparently lends credence to the idea the Habs would hire an unilingual anglo in either position, possibly both. Needless to say, the local media would go utterly ballistic if this were to happen.

I don't think Gauthier has been given a fair shot but I am in favour of a management shakeup if JM and Gainey are kicking stones down the road.

uggg...
the thought of Gainey playing any kind of advisory role with the ownership makes me shudder...

If there is the need for a "major shake-up", how can the same guy who presided over all of the changes since 2003 still be allowed to have any influence in what needs to be done.

we wallowed through the first failed 5 year plan, were in the middle of the second failed 5 year plan, does he really get to lead us into yet another???

Probably not, unless they really start plummetting. If they stay around 9th-10th they probably won't move many pieces this year and just look to add the what they already have next year to give themselves a push.

Sure, but it doesn't reflect well on him and a business man if two-three days later after he says he has confidence in his team that he removes them all. Two-three months and I think you can let what he said slide if the team continues to drop like a stone, but not two-three days.
