I think we'll see Thornton and Thornton together. Additionally, I have a feeling Thornton and Marleau will be on different lines. This is how I see it playing out for the top two lines:

S. Thornton, J. Thornton, Cheechoo
Michalek, Marleau, Ekman/Dimitrakos

The bottom two are a little harder to get a read on. McCauley, Goc, or Smith could all shift to wing.

Maybe:

Ekman, McCauley, Bernier
Smith, Goc, Stevenson / Langfeld.

who knows?

I think what you are going to primarily see is Marleau and Thornton playing on different lines, but when they need a goal and 10 minutes are left, Marleau is going to move onto the LW and play with Thornton. This is what the Avs did with Sakic and Forsberg, and it seemed to work brilliantly.

Thus, in general, I think the lines should be something like this:

Cheechoo Thornton Ekman
Michalek Marleau Bernier
Thornton McCauley Stevenson
Langfeld Goc Smith

Niko comes in if someone is playing bad.

I don't know why most of you relegate Goc/Stevenson to the fourth line! Goc has been our best player so far this season and is clicking perfectly with stevenson. There is no need to ruin that chemestry. McCauley on the other hand has not shown me much not to plce him above the fourth line.
Here are my line recs:

Michalek-J.Thornton-Cheechoo (i believe Cheech can score 35-40 goals with JT)
Ekman-Marleau-Bernier
S.Thornton-Goc-Stevenson
Langfeld-McCauley-Smith

McLaren-Ehrhoff
Hannan-???? (we need to trade for a good defensive #4 D-MAN)
Davison-Gorges/Carkner

1st PP unit
Marleau-Thornton-Cheechoo

Hannan-Ehrhoff

the loss of sturm definitely lessens the sharks' scoring depth at wing, but i think they can now create some great playmaker-finisher combos, at least on the top 2 lines. i think thornton and cheechoo should definitely be paired, and marleau and michalek.

ekman-j.thornton-cheechoo
cheechoo will start looking like glen murray pretty quickly with thornton setting him up, and ekman could get the jumpstart he needs playing on this line
s.thornton-marleau-michalek
hopefully michalek can pick up his scoring again setting up marleau regularly, while thornton acts as a big body in front of the net to create room for patty and milan to make things happen
mccauley-goc-stevenson
goc and stevenson have been working well with sturm, mccauley doesnt bring us much speed and scoring as marco, but could work with goc to form a very effective defensive line. this line needs a finisher and size though, bernier perhaps?
langfeld-smith-dimitrakos/parker
grind grind grind. i still think niko is trade bait, but give him a chance to earn more playing time by working hard on the 4th line.

i miss sturm, but that's not a bad forward corps right there. it's the d that worries me now.

mclaren-preissing
hannan-ehrhoff
davison-fahey
murray

preissing's play has improved, and ehrhoff hasn't made many glaring, game costing mistakes in a while as far as i've seen, but the lineup just begs for another experienced veteran.

Man I want to see Bernier called up

playing him with Thornton will be awsome for his development!!!!!

He gets to play with arguably the best power forward in the game!!!

Bernier and Thornton on the same line would be great

Marleau has proven to me he can play with anyone, so i dont think he and Joe need to be on the same line

But the PP should be improved

Malrleau and Priessing on the point
Thornton, Goc and Cheech up front

TSN said that the likely place for Thornton against Buffalo is on the 2nd line between Cheech and cousin Scotty. With that in mind:

1) Michalek - Marleau - Bernier
2) S Thornton - J Thornton - Cheechoo
3) Ekman - Goc - Stevenson
4) Smith - McCauley - Langfeld

1) McLaren - Preissing
2) Hannan - Fahey
3) Ehrhoff - Davison

1st line keeps Milan and Patty together (who've done well together) and puts the big strong Bernier in a position to learn how to play on the top lines. Joe comes in without the pressure of assuming the top center role, he gets Scott a chance to contribute (which he can slightly) and a bonafide sniper in Cheechoo (his new Glenn Murray?). The 3rd line has Goc and Stevenson who looked decent together, and hopefully sparks Ekman, and the last line takes some offensive pressure off of Alyn.

I'd rationalize more, but I have to head to class now.

I'm happy with Marleau on the wing. He had his best season in 2003-2004 playing there with Damphousse in the middle.

However, I do like the idea of 2 real scoring centres and a dedicated checking line centred by McCauley.

What's with the infatuation of having Scott Thornton on with Joe? Just because they're cousins??? Keep Scott on the 3rd...he's great there!

I really would be suprised if Wilson didn't pair the Thorntons together for some in game mixing up from time to time, but unless they manage some real chemistry I doubt we'll see them in official lineups.

If Marleau isn't moved to wing, and indeed remain at center, at least put them together on the PP unit.

Definately not Kaspar. I would say there's a good chance Bernier gets called up and plays on the top 6.

I'm sure that will happen on the PP and during those "need a goal now" situations late in the game. Can't wait to see them on the PP together.

Wayyyy wayyy wayyyyyyyyy to inconsistant still.

Brilliant on a few nights here and there, then absolutely invisible on others.

BTW Sharkyz...Good heads up on the video.

That line combo is one that I sent threw my head a few times.

I thought mabey Ekman would be on that line as well.

I knew Cheech would though.

Ekman-Marleau-Michalek?

scotty's not gonna stay with joe for very long, i bet you wilson will start his line shuffling five minutes into the buffalo game.

it would be nice to see

joe, cheech, bernier??? or scotty???? or ekman???
patty, milan, niko??? or ekman??? or bernier???
goc, grant, smith
mcauley, ekman???, langfeld???

line 1:
if both thorntons and cheech are put together, then this could become one of the most feared lines in the nhl. guys that can score then beat the crap out of you, literally. but scott thornton might not deliver the offense, so then maybe you put bernier.

line 2:
remember way back, when niko first came to the sharks. The agility the hands he was so freakin' impressive when he was playing alongside marleau and sturm they had some chemistry goin on...then milan came and took that spot from him. so now maybe you try niko with marleau again and milan.

line 3:
by far the best players on the sharks right now, just put all three of them together.

line 4:
i just stuck macauley there because theres no where else to put him, i honestly think him or ekman will get traded real soon.

Some R.Wilson quotes about lines:

Quote:
``Joe Thornton is going to make us better, but Joe Thornton isn't going to be the savior or anything like that. I don't want our players standing and watching Joe Thornton. And I don't want Joe Thornton to think he has the weight of the world on him or that he has to carry the team.''

``It makes us better because it can take some pressure off both of them,'' Wilson said. ``And they can play together, too. I won't hesitate to put either of them on left wing to double them up on a line when you really need to get something going.''
Also says McCauley will move to wing with Goc centering the 3rd.

I expect if that D.Wilson will make a move for D by the deadline if they don't perform...and I don't think they will.

I was thinking:

Cheechoo-Thornton-Michalek (Thornton can help Michalek reach his potential)

Ekman-Marleau-Mccauley (Might want to switch Ekman and Cheechoo to jumpstart Ekman; Mcauley will be fine as a winger)

S.Thornton-Goc-Stevenson (Seems to have good chemistry)

Langfeld/Dimitrakos-Smith-Parker (Hope this line works. Dimitrakos can take Ekman or Mccauley's spot in the top six if need be.

Here's my revised lines:

S Thornton, J Thornton, Cheechoo
Michalek, Marleau, Ekman/Dimitrakos
McCauley, Goc, Stevenson
Langfeld, Smith, Ekman/Dimitrakos

I'd like to start Ekman up with the Marleau line and possibly with the Thornton line in place of Scott in the future. If we could get Ekman going, it would be a huge boost to our team.

Whomever out of Ekman/Dimitrakos doesn't start on the Marleau line may be on the third in place of Stevenson who drops to the 4th. I'd be hard pressed to move Stevenson from that line, however, as he and Goc have clicked so well.

Our offense does look much improved IMO. Face-off winning percentage will be better solely from the addition of Thornton and subtraction of McCauley from our centers. Now if only our defense wasn't so weak.

Here's hoping for an inspired hard working game tonight, much like the Bruins last night.

If they don't go on a winning streak in the next 2 weeks there won't be any need to make a move at the deadline. They are 11 points out of a playoff spot with 3 games in hand on Edmonton. Sharks will need a month like Dallas just had to have a chance to make the playoffs.
I agree with you that they aren't likely to improve without help on defense.
