Well, it goes beyond that because the team was young on paper in that 2007 cup run. But it was also the peak for that team, who missed their window of opportunity who started in the beginning of the 2000's. I could name you a lot of factors that forced the team to decline :

- Redden over Chara. Redden = AHL, Chara = Norris
- Havlat for not much. Scoring depht for no depht
- Emery = good in 2006-07, sucked after because of his attitude problems.
- Gerber = not a N.1 and with the Emery problem, we had to litterally rebuild the goaltending (and of course it took some time). We were also stucked with Gerber's contract
- Almost non-existent prospect pool = forces you to retain players who will cost more money or to sign UFAs who weren't "raised" in the culture of the team. Every team needs to bring new talent every year.
- Corvo = wanted out (in hindsight, Murray probably wish he could have traded him for a pick and prospect, but the team was expected to contend so he traded him for a quick fix)
- Meszaros = regressed, asked for too much money (4M$ as a RFA, wtf?), we were forced to trade him quickly (although Murray did good there)
- Alfredsson's aging/decline = what were going to do after that? He has been carrying the team on his shoulders for so long
- Heatley = left the boat as soon as there was some adversity, puting Murray in a very bad spot.
- Bad coaching choices (that's on Murray, always said it)
- Etc.

With all the problems the team faced since the cup run (and main problems happened before Murray was the GM), the best thing to do was to make big changes. We have no idea what goes behind the scenes but maybe Murray wanted to do it earlier, but Melnyk insisted that he kept trying to contend for Alfie, which explains the Kovalev and Gonchar signings, or the Stillman/Commodore or Cullen/Sutton rentals, etc.
