Howson won't be as pleased when Patrick takes his job...in, oh, say 2 months tops.

Patrick couldn't do any worse of a job than Howson is doing at the moment.

Good for him - he deserves a shot like this. I'm wondering if this wasn't forced upon Howson in order for him to keep his job... for now.

Has he been done anything hockey-related since Shero replaced him?

Good for him. Fresh start and new team that's not to far away.

Good luck, Craig.

I hope being away from the game for awhile helps him. This guy is a terrific hockey mind. Very happy for him.

Congrats to CP. Hopefully he can turn that team into something less nap-inspiring.

I saw the video in your avatar the other day. It's awesome!

Might we see a Patrick-Therrien combination in Columbus by season's end?

I've always been a big CP supporter. Yeah, he made some tough deals towards the end of his time here, but what do you expect? He had to unload money, and the return wasn't top priority. Could he have done better; most likely, but he had to unload some players to free up money.

He had a hell of a career here, and I'm shocked he hasn't been given a chance elsewhere.

does this count?

Hockey Hall of Famers Mario Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Bryan Trottier, Craig Patrick, Larry Murphy and Andy Bathgate will join Jean Pronovost, Syl Apps, Dave Burrows, Bryan Watson, and Ron Schock as more than 50 former Pittsburgh Penguins celebrate the final regular season game at Mellon Arena Thursday, April 8 vs. the New York Islanders.

The special guests include former players, coaches and general managers who played such a huge part of Penguins history at the old arena – which was known as the Civic Arena when the team made its NHL debut in the 1967-68 season

It will mark the 1,667th and final regular season game played at the Arena before the Penguins move across the street to the sparkling new Consol Energy Center next season

Hard to know whether Patrick views this is an opportunity to get back to the day-to-day running of a team or not. I would not say that this is a blanket certainty.

This is something that has been in the works for some time that Jacket fans expected to see some time this past offseason. Whether there are "conditions" re: existing staff is not known. I'm more inclined to buy into a sort of "steady hand" approach, in which current CBJ management is totally inexperienced (president Mike Priest, who has also been a point person for the team's financial issues concerning the arena and its position in realignment, etc.) and green but with potential (Howson). I think "senior hockey advisor" is a totally accurate title.

saavy move by Columbus. Patrick is still one of the better hockey minds out there. One could argue is the US' version of Scotty Bowman with everything he has accomplished. He got stale here, but he is still a fine talent evaluator as anyone out there....good for him....

If nothing else, his name brings some legitimacy to a franchise that is sorely lacking it. And my guess is he'll bring something else, too.
