I don't see what's so messed up about it. Free agents are going to be free agents and pick where they want to go. These teams have the chance to build contenders with those players and instead trade for trash. New Orleans is paying a 10 and 9 center an enormous contract. Even I would know not to do that! And now the Lakers may have to pay Okafor, because he might be in the deal. That kinda sucks.
The Lakers are just Man City/Madrid of the NBA, except in this case you support them. In the other case you despise them.
No, it was because the Hornets are basically owned by the other 29 owners. Don't forget that the Hornets don't have a real owner, so the rest of the league has the team's control. Small market ******** like Dan Gilbert is one of the owners that vetoed it. David Stern was forced to stop this trade from happening. He wouldn't have done anything had the Hornets had an owner. And even though I love seeing bad things happen to the Lakers (I'm a Clipper fan), this just wasn't fair to Laker fans, the team, and especially Chris Paul.

I don't know anything about basketball either, but from what I could tell the deal was nixed because a lot of other clubs felt it would make the Lakers too powerful. Is that the gist of it?

pretty much. Alot of owners complained about it. The commissioner has too much power. Just another reason why the NBA has become the crappiest league in america.
And on a non Los Angeles sports related tip...Ive rediscoverd "Black Celebration". What a ****ing fantastic album. How unbelieveably relevent is "New Dress" today even though Di is dead.
My 9 year old daughter was digging through my old DM cd's and asked me about a song she heard on sirrius called "World in My Eyes". How cool is that. I responded with "yeah, thats one of the best club songs ever written. It still is... Even 20 years later.
I'll never forget...Sometime in the dead of winter in 1991, 2:30am on a random Sunday morning. The Limelight. The smell of Drakkar, DaJarums and sweat with "World in my Eyes" pounding endlessly on the dance floor. Good times!
