I was able to get a pint of this not long ago myself - it seemed sweeter than I remember it being in years past. Still damn good though.

It was the SLP one, but I'm sure it's tapped now. Seems like they randomly spring up and get sold out quickly.

Don't do that when it's still coffee drinking time in Minnesota

Then you need to have some Irish coffee.

Pretty much. I know a couple places which have it for a while (2-3 weeks) but that's because they are off the beaten path and no one knows they have Darkness.

At this point if you haven't had Darkness in the Twin Cities area, the best bet might be The Blue Door on the Winter Solstice Day.

As your average poor finnish student kid, I haven't really ventured in to the world of different beers outside basic mass produced lagers. To me, pretty much anything goes, as long as the 12-pack has a pricetag of 10€ attached to it.

Pirkka lager, as one of the finnish posters here described, is your ultimate "avoid at all costs" beer. For those of you who don't know, Pirkka is a "private label" brand used for many products (food, everyday stuff you get from a grocery store) by the biggest store chain in Finland. Its products are generaly viewed as cheap and low quality (not true), but I could never imagine myself drinking a can of that ever again (yes had to buy once 'cause nothing else was there). It's not the taste, it's the image. Imagine yourself drinking beer labeled "Wall-Mart" (yeah far-fetched but you get the idea).

I can't really understand the hate for Lapin Kulta though. Its recipe was changed a few years ago and IMO is the best tasting lager out of those mass produced beers of Finland.

Some Irish cream in an iced coffee sounds great about now.

I believe the term you're looking for is "Shop's own brand". The Wal-Mart comparison was spot on, though. The thing is, a lot of Pirkka products are acceptable in quality, so I tend to buy them myself quite often. But Pirkka beer? Never again. It manages to be bitter and watery at the same time.

Actually, I don't personally like any lager-type beers too much, I think stout and porter are much, much better. That being said, I also like dark chocolate much better than the milk variety, so maybe I'm just a strange person.

Speaking of chocolate, I want a Minttukaakao (Mint Cocoa) right now. Too bad the skiing season has not started yet...

Grabbed a sixxer of that stuff last night. Good stuff, especially for the price.

Almost also grabbed a 4 pack of Surly Abrasive but couldn't bring myself to pay $16 for it. Sheesh.

I had the same exact experience earlier tonight...looked at the abrasive was 16 bucks...went with Celebration. Very tasty.

Side note - Midway Liquors' new location on Prior is a very nice setup...go visit them if you're in the area.

Had some Snake Chaster tonight. It's an Irish style stout, extremely flavorful, very bitter. Overall it was pretty good, although I couldn't finish the entire bottle.

Got a case of Celebration. Cracked one last night, fell asleep after three sips. Hate that.

I thought about it since it's on sale but there's only 3 of each in the sampler and I'm not a big fan of Horizon or the IPA. Also Summit Winter is about the only decent tap beer at a lot of bars/restaurants I've been to lately so I've had a lot of it.

One sampler I won't buy again is the New Belgium Folly pack. I got one for 10.99: Ranger is an okay IPA, not great; Fat Tire is quaffable, but again a pretty average beer; Belgo is okay, but had an off-putting chemical flavor; HopTober was awful skunky nasty stuff.

I like Fat Tire quite a bit when it's on tap. But I've never had a bottle of it and been all that thrilled...

It's similar to Summit EPA in that way.

So, who else has two thumbs are will be driving into 'Sconnie Land for some New Glarus (and others) for the Holidays?

Also, has anyone had anything bad from Alaskan, like, ever? Would like to try it on tap because I feel like I'm missing out...

I tried the New Belgium winter ale, tasted a lot like Fat Tire but a hint of winter ale-ness (a bit more malt and some chocolate flavor). Not bad.
