By this, I mean not running Timonen into an early grave (Laviolette), continuing to play the youngsters in high-pressure game situations (Laviolette), and not making desperation short-term deals (Holmgren).
Marshall is not ready and is playing zero minutes on PK, Bourdon is a lot better but still does not play PK, Carle started to play on PK but is not very good at it. Mesz is ok and Coburn is basically number #2 PKing d-men.

5'10 Timonen is going to play some hard minutes this season. We need to start using Walker a lot more and hope for the best or pick up someone better (with no cap room)

I am not sure if I should read between the lines when Flyers doctors use "concussion like symptoms". Bad, real bad? Not so bad? Who knows?

I wonder if this means that Holmgren will begin shopping for a top four defenseman. If I'm the GM of the Flyers, I shut Pronger down for the rest of the year and maybe the start of the playoffs.

I suppose it's irrational of me, but my line of thinking was that concussions are predominantly caused by rapid changes in momentum of the head, causing the brain to smack against the inside of the skull, if I understand correctly. A stick blade to the face, travelling mostly upwards, was enough to open Pronger's face, but I was doubting the force of impact with respect to his brain. An altogether unscientific post on my part.

I hope this doesn't mean panic trade, I'd rather go with the guys we got and rather not shoot ourselves in the future foot further

You're absolutely right, and I think there needs to be a lot more whistling past the graveyard, by necessity, so Timonen isn't gassed by February or, worse, on IR himself. Does anyone have any updates on Gustafsson?

I'm kind of ticked by this. It always seems like the flyers medical staff can't properly diagnose concussions in a timely manner and this leads to further injury or time wasted. Maybe it just seems that way to me but it was obvious something funky was wrong with pronger so i feel like they probably missed something.

Jesus another concussion.

Us in the Atlantic are getting killed by these, Staal, Crosby, Pronger, Ninermeater (whatever his name is).

I think homer almost has to make a deal for a defenseman now. This is the perfect reason to make room for a young top defenseman to build the team around for the future. Being realistic, this team is probably still a year or two away from being legit contenders for the cup. I say we go for it on the trade market and land a guy like suter and lock him up so when the time comes for us to compete, we won't have to gut the team making dumb knee jerk moves.

So with all this cap space we're getting off LTIR I expect some sort of big pickup come the trade deadline. Just saying....

What is there to update? Gus is out since Nov 6 for 6-8 weeks and he is not our answer on PK. Coming back from wrist injury like that takes time anyway. He won't be effective right away.
Got to limit minor penalties and play Walker since we took a gamble on him and got lucky.

To make a move for a top 4 d-men right now will be like suicide. We probably going to overpay big time. Sabres and Pens already shopped around.

No but you can LTIR "retire" him and give him the cubicle next to Lappy.

The medical staff is still at the mercy of the player in some of these cases though. I don't know a lot about concussions, I know they do the baseline tests and what not, but they are asking how he feels and he says he's fine, don't they have to take his word? Its not like its a knee where they can do a MRI and see that there's a strain or tear.
These are tough guys who don't want to sit out, maybe Pronger just convinced himself that he was OK.

which everyone knows he will overpay for. If he gave up a 1st and a 3rd for Versteeg what does a top 4 defenseman get? Holmgren is going to be held over a barrell for a defenseman and we all know Holmgren will cave in.

Cant the NHL have their doctors check to see if he was put there for a legit reason?

Yeah lets get Suter. If we add him and and a faceoff specialist, we can still make a run this season. Especially if Pronger comes back in some capacity.

Still a couple of weeks away from returning on the ice, I think.
Too bad. They could really use the solid 15-18min per game he is good for.

The more I think about it, I doubt that they can make it without adding an extra body to the mix.

He's near 40, gets headaches, and his brain is likely swiss cheese. I'd say they'd be able to defend it.

We should try to trade for Beauchemin or Lydman.
