Montreal loves taking crappy players with bad contracts. Any interest in Redden?

Kaberle for Spacek? Carolina had to have thrown in a pick or something, right? Why would Montreal do that otherwise? What a dumb move.

Good deal for both teams.

I seem to recall Leafs fans claiming a Kaberle rental was worth Kovalchuk price last year.

How is it good for the Habs? The risk greatly outweighs the reward, IMO. At best, they become a bubble playoff team. At worst, they gave up empty cap space for another pylon on defense and are stuck with him for another 2 years. A desperate move by a desperate team. Slats should act quickly while Gauthier is still drunk. Maybe he could swing Redden for their 1st.

While he didn't get Kovalchuk price, I still think Toronto got a good deal.

A 1st round pick and Colborne aren't bad.

Kaberle has been terrible on Carolina this year (and wasn't too hot w/ the Bruins either).

HOWEVER, it isn't a 35+ contract. Montreal can bury him the final 2 years if need be, and there might be an amnesty buy-out w/ the new CBA.

It looks like Markov may be out for good, so they are trying to save their PP. It's a medium risk, and not laughable as some as you describe.

GM Rutherford had threatened Kaberle in the press by saying, get better or I will trade you. No surprise, doesn't get clearer than that.

You think trading Kaberle for Spacek makes carolina stronger? Really? Spacek will be gone at the end of the year. They only thing they gained was cap space for next year.

BTW, anyone know what's going on in the trade forum? The trade was posted, but the thread has been moved and when I click on it, it says invalid thread. Why did the mods move/remove it?

Edit: Apparently they had some technical difficulties. The thread is up now.

Did trading Gomez make us stronger?

And a 2nd as well...the 2nd was conditional on either the Bruins making the SC Finals or Kaberle re-signing with the Bruins. Actually I think at the end of the day Burke wound up getting more than the Thrashers did.

For a budget team like the Canes getting rid of that salary was a huge win for them, he was just signed in the off season for 3yers @12.75million.

Leafs sold Rogers/Bell

Canadian telecommunications giants Bell Media and Rogers Communications are uniting to buy a 75-percent share of the Toronto Maple Leafs and other properties in a mega deal that was announced Friday. The deal is reportedly worth $1.32 billion.

I would have to believe the amnesty would be used on Gomez, no?

We got McD back. They got Spacek. Big difference. Yeah, the cap space will help them, but who are they gonna sign that's going to make them a threat?

You never know with Montreal management, what they are going to do.

So they have Gomer at 7+, Markov and Cammalleri both near 6, Kaberle over 4 mil, Plekanec, Gionta, Cole all around 5 mil, and Price is up for a contract after this year.

I suppose they wont re-sign Kostitsyn.

I would think it would help them in a couple of ways:

Budget team isn't gonna make a Brad Richards type signing so it allows them to sign a "B" level FA

With the CBA being up and no clear direction on what will happen, having cap space will allow them to maybe pick up a good player with a bad cap number who might be available if there is another amnesty buyout as there was when the current CBA went into effect.

Getting rid of Kaberle and his contract would have been a win even if they only got back a bag of pucks from Montreal.

Carolina is the last team in our new conference I am worried about, no offense to them.

If we are fighting with Carolina for the 4th spot, chances are all the teams are in for it and we're not exactly favorites to make a run.

Early prediction for next seasons are obviously hard to make with FA, injuries and trades between now and then, but I am willing to bet that it is going to be a 5 team race. Carolina and the Isles are not going to make the playoffs next year.

That was like a week and a half ago. He didn't really give him much time to get better. It's a surprise because you would think he'd give him a little longer.

Gauthier is making Sather look like George Costanza with these contracts, good lord.

Jason Garrison and Mike Weaver are both criminally underrated, same with Kulikov and Campbell it seems.

There's a team in our division whose fanbase seems to be imploding. I would've thought their early years of ineptitude would've given them more resiliency, like ours. I guess it takes decades of ineptitude to develop?

Helps to have a big enough fanbase full of people willing to suffer through ineptitude and suckage.
