Good point, agreed.

Campoli's a bottom-pairing guy at best, he could help out powerplay but probably better suited to our second wave than the first.

That's what Gauthier said. This guy has 0 credibility. He only tried to protect his signing but now everybody know that it's a terrible move.

People don't seem to understand that medicine is not an exact science. Return estimates are simply estimates, they can be wrong.

When Campoli returns ? Who will sit out, Diaz or Emelin ? I doubt it's Gill even though I prefer to scratch him.

hmm, now we can afford to re-unite yashin with martin. I'm sure those two guys love each other. Big centre issue solved.

Gill will not be scratched. He's not as bad as this board makes him out to be. My hope is that Diaz gets bumped. Diaz can be good but he's too erratic, plus he's more flexible since he can be sent down to the minors. Campoli should be a slight upgrade on him if nothing else.

if he was a legit top 4 guy he wouldn't have been waiting until camps opened without a contract. The guy sucks.

I hope not Emelin, who brings something a bit different to the team than the other softer offensive-type Ds.

Subban-Gill
Emelin-Kaberle
Gorges-Campoli

Campoli has 8PP goals in 398 games. To put that in perspective, Subban had 9 PPG in 77 games last year.

He's nothing more than bottom-pairing 5vs5 and 2nd PP unit D-man with no specific skillset that truely designates him a QB or Trigger man.

Kaberle is a proven Top-4 D-man that QB's a #1 PP unit. How anyone (not you in this case) could compare the two is absolutely beyond my comprehension. Idealy with Markov returning sometime in Jan, Kaberle will become our #3-4 D man behind Markov, Subban and Gorges. If Kaberle can return to his Leafs form, argument could be made he'd be our #2 behind Markov (providing Markov returns to form).

He probably wouldn't have been waiting that long if he was a UFa from day 1, however he was a RFA until AFTER his arbitration, so by that time lots of teams needing defensemen had already used up their cap room or budget on UFA's.

Gill has a huge roll on this team. I would be furious if he is a healthy scratch. It will be Diaz.

Gill is an elite PKer and probably the best in the NHL on 5 on 3s, but he's a role player who can see the bench depending on context. He is not a good 5 on 5 defender anymore.

For the most part Diaz should probably be the first to see the bench consistently as Campoli and Kaberle make him redundant, but one thing about actually having defensive depth is to play to your matchup.

Really no defender except Gorges has earned guaranteed minutes on this team.

Gorges for sure;

Subban would be another guaranteed minutes d-man, as well as Kaberle now, and potentially Emelin locking his place permanently in the short future.

Kaberle is not a top 4 dman imo. He's a pp specialist who isn't great 5vs5.

In a sheltered environment playing soft minutes and the 1st pp unit he may prove to be somewhat successful. Otherwise, you're expecting way, way too much. You've never seen a declining player record 2 assists?

Kaberle is top 4 on basically any team in the NHL. Even 5 on 5 his puck movement and passing skills are top flight. He isn't great defensively, but in his time in Toronto he was slightly above average in that regard, I think his defensive struggles early on in Carolina(was -11 before this week's +2) were related to conditionning.

Those of you who are criticizing Campoli should understand that he is a very good bottom pairing defender when he has a stay at home with him. Let us review our defenders:

Subban: Two way defender and can play both stay at home or puck rusher

Diaz: More of a puck moving defender than anything, but relatively solid in his own zone. NOT physical.

Campoli: Pure puck rushing defenseman who can play average defense. Excellent wheels, vision and shot.

Gill: shutdown defender who is complimentary to any puck rusher

Kaberle: Puck rushing defenseman who should have enough experience to play in his own zone. Should not be relied upon to anchor a pairing any longer. Great at breakouts once he has the puck.

Emelin: Similar to Subban insofar in that he is a complete defender and has all the tools. Should be regarded at this time as a stay at home defenseman on this team

Gorges: The ideal defensive defense man. This guy is simply a warrior and in my opinion our most stable defender right now.

Weber: Not great at any one facet at this time. A solid guy to set up for a one timer on a second powerplay unit. Not in the top six right now.

Conclusion:

Emelin-Subban
Kaberle-Gorges
Gill-Campoli

Put your weakest defender and guy with lowest confidence with Gorges. Play this pairing for about 20 minutes a night and use Gorges more if need be. Hide Kaberle in late stages of the game.

Put Campoli with Gill because they are both vets and should be able to work together.

Use Emelin and Subban as top pair and play them 25 minutes a night if need be.
