Dec. 20 update: Giroux (concussion) could return Dec. 21; medically cleared to play

Giroux will be re-evaluated Sunday.

Interview with Holmgren:

Quote:
WELLS FARGO CENTER — Another head injury may be haunting the Flyers. In the second period of Saturday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Claude Giroux was kneed in the head and left the game.

With under two minutes left in the second period, Giroux was trying to catch up to Ryan Shannon and went down on all fours at center ice. Wayne Simmonds was behind him and tried to leap over his teammate, but his right knee caught Giroux in the back of the head.

The NHL’s leading goal scorer skated off the ice under his own power and eventually left the bench for the locker room after talking with athletic trainer Jim McCrossin.

Giroux did not join the team on the ice for the third period.

“He was evaluated by our doctors, held out for precautionary measures in the third period and we’ll evaluate him again tomorrow and see how he is,” said Paul Holmgren.

“Not really a headache or anything like that. This was really just a precautionary stage where we didn’t want to put him back in there at that time. It’s a game in December and obviously he’s one of our better players. We’ll just err on the side of caution here.”

Quote:
WELLS FARGO CENTER — With seven minutes to go in the third period, Ilya Bryzgalov left the ice and Sergei Bobrovsky relieved him. He was briefly in the tunnel, speaking with a trainer and reemerged on the bench with his mask resting on top of his head.

“It’s an equipment issue,” said the goalie after the game.

Are you sure about that?

“Yeah it was…no, I’m a bad liar.”

Sure, the one-liner is funny, but a potential injury is not.

“It’s an old boo boo, that’s it,” said Bryzgalov. “It starts for a little bit.”

He said he was able to go back in the game, but Peter Laviolette said there was no thought to putting him back in. General manager Paul Holmgren said that he expects Bryzgalov to be available for the next game and the goalie did him one better and said he’s not day-to-day, but rather “hour-to-hour probably.”

Bryzgalov was seen rubbing his right thigh in the tunnel, but wouldn’t confirm the injury.

“It was an injury issue, lower-body,” said Holmgren. “After the second period he wanted to continue and it stiffened up on him during the third.”

“It was starting to bother me more and more during the game and we decided to be safe,” said Bryzgalov.

Just got back from the game and boy was that scary. Whole section went quiet. I could barely pay attention to the rest of the game, kept looking at the bench.

Hopefully all it is just as a precautionary measure and he's okay. Gonna need the guy.

As for Bryz leaving for Bob, that's still a mystery to me. Anyone got word?

Bryzgalov's injury has been termed minor and lower body.

Thanks. Minor and lower body sounds a whole lot better than upper body/precautionary/virus etc. My phone wasn't charged so I had no help there, and I saw him take Bob's spot by the bench door, so I was just guessing cramps or something at the time.

Here is what Tim P. is reporting:

Quote:
Bryzgalov may have right thigh bruise. "I'm a bad liar," he (Bryzgalov) said when trying to peddle an equipment issue as an excuse.
Bryzgalov's quote: “It was an equipment issue. No, I’m a bad liar. It’s an old boo-boo. It’s still sore a little bit.”

Good gravy I hope he is ok. Would be a shame not just for the team but for him having such a good season.

... I hope this is true. Thing is though, with concussions often i is what is felt the next day or so is what tells the tale. But after listening to Homer, and realizing that they will not screw around with their budding superstar, letting him sit out the third period for precautionary purposes is the wise and almost only thing for them to do... I honestly believe they are being honest and feel he is okay... But, also I want to hear them say he is fine before Monday's practice before I can feel secure on it.

I cant stop thinking about this. if this guy doesn't ,give us our first Art Ross this year then knows who ill take it out on! Even if eh returns completely fine its still frustrating knowing he could have had another point or 2 in the 3rd period and with tough games against good defensive teams coming up, you need all the easy points you can get.

It's within the video (around 10 seconds).

There was obvious, but not devastating, contact between Roo's head and Simmonds knee. Giroux looked a bit stung by it--but he definately wasn't dazed or out of it.

Don't know. These things are odd--it's not always the biggest hits, but the unexpected contact that seems to generate the problems.

I'm only partly assuaged by Holmgren's comments. I hope they take an uncharacteristically cautious approach. I'd rather Roo miss the next two or three games and give himself a week to make sure he's right than come back too soon and leave himself vulnerable long-term.

Now do you honestly think he would tell some random person on the way home that he feels like ****? Don't think so..
