Wellwood was not retained to the chagrin of most Sharks fans because he did not produce in the WCF and was clearly too small and too soft for our 3rd line.

Wellwood was great for the Sharks last year. Problem with the Sharks is, the entire roster, with the exceptions of Clowe, Murray, Vandermeer, Winchester and McGinn, is filled with softer players. The need for grit or sand paper, outweighed the need for a player like Wellwood, at least in Doug's mind. Personally, I think he was wrong, but he's building the team, and he decided that Winchester deserved the last roster spot and filled the necessary role.
