kirk- i thought that since donato wasn't protected in the waiver draft, the b's were free to send him down w/out clearing waivers. is that not the rule? thanks..

From today's Globe:

"Assistant general manager Jeff Gorton said one of the reasons for sending forward Ted Donato to Providence was that Donato would've had to clear waivers if he stayed with the club for 10 games or 30 days. Because Donato went through waiver purgatory a couple of seasons ago, being claimed by the Kings from the Islanders March 6, 2002, less than two months after signing with New York, then claimed by St. Louis March 19, the possibility of that happening again was discussed before Donato re-signed with Boston as a free agent July 22. "You don't want to say you're doing a guy a favor by sending him down," said Gorton, "but we wanted to keep him in the organization." . . ."
