please trade away half the team for 5 players and makes sure you keep all our useless players in the lineup. So ribeiro, ryder, markov, rivet, bouillon, koivu, komisarek, pleks, higs, heck throw in latendresse...and in return i want A) marleau b) bertuzzi and c) anything that moves...
PS> try and get carbo out of retirement will ya...
Unless a major opportunity presents itself, I don't expect Gainey to make a trade this week.
Patience is required at this point of the season. Several reasons I can think of for waiting:
(1) Waiting to make a trade at a time closer to the deadline can land the Habs a better player because an out-of-contention team may want to dump him and less of the salary will count towards the $3M cap space the Habs have to work with (with 2/3 of the season gone, the Habs can have space for any player in the league in terms of salary!).
(2) Players are returning from injury. The return of Koivu, Komi, Markov and to some extent Bonk will have the same short-term energizing effect as a trade. Then Kovy will return a week or two following that, energizing the team even more. The team will then be the same that won all those games at the beginning of the season!
(3) Waiting to see how the team performs once all the players are back tells Gainey EXACTLY what the needs are. If the team regains its scoring touch, then he can go and confidently improve the defense. If the 2nd/3rd line scoring remains anemic, he may also want to bring in some reiforcements in that department. Being patient lets you plug the right weaknesses as they arise/persist when the season progresses.
