Sabres-Ducks

Derek Roy to Anaheim for Peter Holland and what else? Maybe your first rounder this coming season if the Ducks can get closer to .500 and it's maybe 8th or 10th instead 1st or 3rd overall. Gives Anaheim a true second line center for the first time, really, since they won the cup.

While I would love to add Roy as our 2nd line center for the future. There are a couple of things that probably won't allow it to happen.

-He makes too much money this year. If you take Blake, who is FA at the end of the year, it may make it possible.

-He may be too expensive next year. While I firmly believe that 5.5 is very doable next year, there are some who will probably disagree, one being Murray.

-His contract expires same time Getzlaf and Perry's do. I think this may be the biggest issue, especially if Holland is a part of the deal.

I do think a trade is possible for Roy, but it may take some slick work from Murray that I don't think he can do. To show that we could fit him in next year, I'll do next years roster. What about this trade:

To Anaheim: Roy
To Buffalo: Holland, Beleskey, Blake, Rakkel.

This seasons lineup afterwards

Hagman-Getzlaf-Perry
Cogliano-Koivu-Selanne
Ryan-Roy-Palmeiri
Pelley-Macenauer-Parros/Gordon

Next years (including salaries). Estimated salaries
FA(2.5)-Getzlaf(6.125)-Perry(4.875)
Ryan(5.563)-Roy(5.5)-Palmeiri(.900)
Cogliano(2.35)FA(1.5)-DSP(.760)
Pelley(.650)-Macenauer(.650)-Parros(.875)
Gordon(.550)

Lubo(3.0)-Lydman(3.0)
Beauchemin(4.2)-Fowler(.900)
Sbisa(2.0)-Brookbank(.850)
FA(.600)

Hiller(4.5)
Tarrki(.700)

Total:52.55 million

The following offseason is where trouble woud occur due to re-signing so many players, but I do think it's possible to add him.

If the Sabres trade Roy, who would play center for them?? The Sabres would be looking to dump wingers and salary. Two things the Ducks don't want. Their needs are probably far too similar to be trading partners.

He will be too expensive for the Ducks. We really need someone signed longterm at a cheap contract or we need to pray Holland can playout his first 2 contracts as a #2.

Not to mention the trouble this would give the sabres.

the sabres would never ever take that.. they are giving up their 1/2nd line C at a good deal imo and they aren't even getting a roster player back? not happening..

How about Roy and Buffalo's 1st for Holland and Anaheim's 1st. If you have a salary dump you wanna send our way that's more than acceptable. Terry Pegula put Shoane Morrisonn and Ales Kotalik in the minors to save cap space, so that's something we can do. Yes, Roy only has one year left after this season, but if you guys don't invest in one, when will you ever get one. And if he sees that Getzlaf and Perry take hometown discounts, Roy would likely be willing to as well. Or maybe if Roy was allowed to talk with Anaheim about an extension as part of the deal? And yes, losing Roy hurts the Sabres in the immediate, but that core of players (Vanek, Pominville, Miller, and in particular Roy, Stafford, Gaustad) need to be moved for younger pieces to form a real cup contender with or younger core (Myers, Kassian, Ennis, Adam, Sekera, Weber, McNabb, Gerbe) and getting a top pick to get a real #1 center is Buffalo's main priority. Holland would be a nice pickup and could fit in as an eventual 2/3 center with size, similar to Luke Adam.

Or...

To Buffalo:
Anaheim's 2012 1st round pick
C- Peter Holland
G- Jonas Hiller
any cap dump of Anaheim's choice

To Anaheim:
C- Derek Roy
G- Ryan Miller
2012 2nd round pick (via Calgary)

-maybe could see the 2nd becoming the 1st, as long as the Sabres don't fall apart and miss the playoffs

They did well enough without him last season, and they don't need to dump salary, Terry Pegula isn't afraid to dump players to the minors. And while we have depth on the wings, we can also parlay that depth in separate deals for more players to supplement that young core I mentioned above.

2012 First is currently not available. Its a 2nd ooverall pick right now, no way we trade that for Derek Roy.

This wouldn't work. Too much money to spend on Miller and Roy, especially Miller.
