Marshall

Although he hasn't been as impressive as MAB (except his dance moves) I noticed his ice time has gone from an average of 10 minutes or so, but tonight he played less then 5. He's taken some penalties and has had some giveaways but that can be said about the entire defense this year. Why do you think Lavy is starting to bench him so much? I for one think he has been rather impressive overall.

Playing like the puck is a grenade on his stick like he did tonight. Marshall just isn't quite ready for full time duty in the NHL. I believe the blowout in Washington also helped rise his TIO. He played like 4 mins through two periods of the game too. Also he commits some stupid penalties that Lavy obviously preaches against.

Ya, I also dont think he has been too good. He is known for his physical shutdown play, but easily gets pushed off so far in the NHL. When his strength point isnt even working, not looking good in the end.

Agreed. For the type of game he needs to play to be successful, he's just not big enough for the NHL level.

He reminds me of a smaller Ryan Parent. We all know how that worked out for him. It doesn't matter how good of a shutdown guy you are, if you can't move the puck in this league then you're not going to hang around long. It sucks because he seems like a good team guy, but I doubt he ever amounts to a top 4 NHL regular.

Yeah, in the games that has been close, Marshall's ice time has been kept pretty low. He's not really trusted right now, that is pretty evident. There were a ton of penalties tonight as well, which kept both his, Bourdon's and the fourth line's minutes down a little extra.

This might be the only NHL time Marshall will ever see, but even if that is the case he's not being a complete waste of space out there. We've had worse defenders out there in the past few years.

He is still pretty young though, he might still find his game to be a regular bottom pairing guy. Just a few weeks ago none of us (almost at least) thought Bourdon would ever amount to anything. And I have my doubts that Holmgren and the rest thought he would either.

Dude is TWENTY-TWO. In fact, they're both 22.

Give him a shot. And who says Bourdon is an NHL regular? Half of HF was about to declare him a non-prospect after his horrible year, some AHL healthy scratches, and a concussion. I'm not going to claim I expected Bourdon to do this well either, but to say that Marshall can't is just unreal.

I like...

Timonen - Coburn
Meszaros - Pronger/Carle/Replacement
Bourdon - Marshall

For next season.

Carle is better than Meszaros and will ALWAYS be better than Meszaros so pewrsonally, I'd much rather resign Carle and ship Meszaros out. Also, where the hell is Gustafson??? He hsould be in there on the 3rd pairing before EITHER MAB or Marshall. I also can't see us just "eating" Lilja's contract so unless he's on LTIR all of next year then he's most likely going ot be on the bottom pairing.

Theres a big difference between Bourdon and Marshall.

Size and a point shot.

Bourdon's game translates to the NHL much better than the AHL. It's happened a few times with players. The NHL follows a much more rigid style.

Yes, I do.

Marshall or Gustafsson with the other being the 7th.

I agree with preaching patience. I think we need to take this up-and-down debut with a grain of salt, because he likely wouldn't have even seen time with the big club this year if not for a pile of injuries. It's still early in his professional career, and defensemen generally take more time.

I'm willing to be patient, I have heard good things from those who follow the farm very closesly. Sounds like he is a steadying defensive influence down there, in what can sometimes be a very loose and scrambled style of play. At the very least, let's give him more time to see what can develop.

His puck handling is very poor and his agility and footwork is horrendous for a guy his size. I don't think he has what it takes either.

I will wager a bet with you that Marshall is not an NHL regular next season, unless we are struck with injuries again

He kind of reminds me of Jesus of Nazareth....

His name though reminds me of the Fat Albert Christmas Special when the gang was looking for "Marshall."

Start at the 7:39 mark to see what I mean...love mushmouth saying it

well, let's face it, he's no MAB..

marshall just doesn't look like he has the puck playing skills to be an NHL regular at this point, he is OK positionally but seems to get beaten to the outside pretty easily.

MAB on the other hand, is looking like he could develop into a legit top 6 NHL defenseman. He has surprised me in almost every facet of his game. He's played MUCH better in the NHL than he EVER did in the AHL.

This is why they need to make a trade. A third pairing consisting of MAB-Gus-Marshall is not going to cut it come playoff time. They are solid now and some day will probably be perfectly suited to be bottom pairing defensemen, but I don't want a repeat of the 2010 finals when Parent and Kracjiek were getting < a minute of ice time. If they can get a solid defender somehow to plug into that bottom pair or into the second pair and shuffle up the whole blue line, I think they will be ok (obviously not as good as when everyone is healthy, but ok). The end game should look something like this:

Coburn-Timonen
Mez-Carle/New Guy
Carle/New Guy-Gus/MAB
Walker/Gus/MAB
