Yeah I'm going to laugh if Coyle goes to Houston.

The 3 largest college hockey sites are USCHO, CHN and Inside College Hockey (INCH). There are plenty of other good college hockey sites and writers (I'd like to think I'm one) but those are the largest.

IMO he'd be best served to go to CHL and then to Houston. He's not dominating college hockey and seems to need more games. Physically he's there, and he seems to have the work ethic, he just needs to develop his skill and gain experience. Could be a good thing to get his career going.

I also don't think he'd be anywhere near as good in Minnesota this year as an experienced AHL'er.

From Russo:

Also, I have confirmed blog reports out of Boston that Charlie Coyle is leaving Boston University and will play for Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Wild would have been willing to sign him and place him in Houston, but Coyle's made the decision to play junior. The Wild still owns his rights for two more years and will likely sign him before next season.
He's getting ready to be ESPN.

Physically I think he's too advanced for the Q. While it's fun to put up big scoring numbers, he's ridiculously built, and will likely simply outmuscle his often 16-18 year old opponents. I'd be far more concerned with him developing bad habits because of that than I can see benefits from playing in a much more open offensive game.

Am I the only one who would love to see him run over a brat or two before coming over? Physical play, even overly aggressive play is not a bad thing when it's against the opposition.

Besides, you need to be a heartless bully in order to be a successful power forward in today's NHL.

The problem is, he won't be able to just run over most NHL players, so what does he learn by playing against people he can just crush?

I read this this morning and I was surprised. I thought he was going to be coming here when I first read he was going to be leaving BU, but I won't mind if he goes to the Q or to the A. I'd prefer to see him in the A because of the higher competition, and we could use him in the NHL at some point this year.

The one good part if he goes to Saint John is that Phillips already plays there. I'd hope they could get on a line together and start to develop some chemistry.

Well, it should at least improve his hitting technique. And there are a lot of very small NHL players around nowadays, too.

I hope he ends up in Houston. Going to get in an agrument on the prospects board with someone about this. As a 19 year old going on 20 he's taking a step down from the level of play he has been going against and it's going to be how many points can I put up against a bunch of 17/18 year olds after playing against men in Hockey East. Since Fletcher couldn't have any negotiations with him becaue he was in NCAA hopefully he can talk to his agent and convince him to sign and go to Houston and start developing there after WJC.

Not a fan of the Wild not doing their best to get him Houston. Sounds as if they letting Coyle make the decision. Hopefully they're in his/his agent's ear the next couple of weeks. Do not see how potentially putting up video game numbers helps his development.

I agree.

I'd rather him get a taste of the AHL, learn the professional game, be around the veterans, and learn our system than go to the QMJHL.

@Russostrib You think the Wild are giving Coyle too much rope here? Seems so to me given academic reports out there/his decision to go to Q

@TOAVii first there is no rope. He's not their property. No control over him. Second, academic reports are untrue from what I hear

Houston? My guess is that Fletch had a hand in this and: (A) this means they're concerned about two of Lats/Butch/Koivu long-term, and (B) even a half-decent showing in the A means a very quick call-up.

Erm, spoke too quickly. Very disappointed and a little bit baffled that he turned down Houston for the Q.

I wonder if "welcome to go to Houston, but chose Q" really means "first we know about it, we're talking to his agent." Other rumblings I've seen say deal's not done with Saint John.

Edit to add:

Don't underestimate the impact of playing nice with Saint John. They are in charge of one of our big prospects right now so there is likely some politics involved.

This is one of those situations where I am in a "wait and see" mode.

Not enough hard facts as to what is going on, outside of BU seems to be one big quagmire of **** right now.

Pretty much this. Everyone is saying pretty much the same thing, only with a different twist on their story.

Hopefully the Wild can convince him that being paid in Houston is better for his development than beating up on 16/17 year olds.

I'm fine with him playing in the CHL. I prefer it when it comes to player development. Coyle's choice in the matter anyway.

Can he play in the Q, participate in the WJC, and then head to Houston?

From the sounds of it, he isn't head to Saint John until after the WJC anyway.

Wow, big news!

Hopefully he didn't leave because of academic problems - that wouldn't show very good character; slacking off at college, then immediately giving up.

From a team standpoint, I can't tell if this is good or bad news. This could potentially stunt his development. I wonder how this affects his WJC plans?

The one thing about the Q is that he and Philliips would be together for the rest of this year with the assumption that both will move up next year.

Of course, it is Charlie's decision (and I say that as a Dogs' fan).
