This is why they need to make a trade. A third pairing consisting of MAB-Gus-Marshall is not going to cut it come playoff time. They are solid now and some day will probably be perfectly suited to be bottom pairing defensemen, but I don't want a repeat of the 2010 finals when Parent and Kracjiek were getting < a minute of ice time. If they can get a solid defender somehow to plug into that bottom pair or into the second pair and shuffle up the whole blue line, I think they will be ok (obviously not as good as when everyone is healthy, but ok). The end game should look something like this:
Coburn-Timonen
Mez-Carle/New Guy
Carle/New Guy-Gus/MAB
Walker/Gus/MAB
We say that though. but OD last season was barely breaking 10 minutes during the playoffs (if I can remember correctly).

Marshall and Walker will get sent down again as soon as Gus and Lilja are back to play with Meszaros.
Bourdon will play with Carle until they trade for someone better.
Who they can get on D will depend on Giroux and Schenn. If Homer has to get a C and a D, he'll have to do both affordably. If the forwards come back soon and OK, maybe he can get a really good Dman on an expiring contract for the playoffs?

That's ok though. He was a responsible D-man on the third pair. In the playoffs, ice time for third pairing guys will go down. The problem is when you have guys like Parent and Krajicek who are not responsible players so they don't even get two minutes of ice time and when they do, it is terrifying. In the regular season, its not a big deal to have Parent/Karciejk/whoever out there getting limited minutes. But in the playoffs you can't have them getting either big minutes or no minutes. You need guys like OD who can play ten minutes but not have to worry. I'd be very worried if Gus and MAB were out there together for ten minutes in the SCF. If one is out with a more responsible D-man, that's fine. But having them out there together for ten minutes in the SCF or for one minute like it was in 2010, is not a good idea IMO.

If they decide to play Lilja over Gus, maybe they keep Walker at 7D and let Gus play in the AHL for a bit.
I don't think they need to go after a guy like Weber (though it would be nice). They just need a non-rookie who is not going to be a liability. I don't have any names in mind off the top of my head, but somone comparable to Carle or Coburn would be ideal (not necessarily in age, but skill).
I will wager a bet with you that Marshall is not an NHL regular next season, unless we are struck with injuries again
we should trade our young defenseman for draft pics and sign a few 35 year old defenseman to long term deals. They have worked out great so far.
Who needs young defenseman. Lets judge em after a handfull of NHL games.

where did I say we should do that? no where
i simply said that Marshall does not have what it takes to be an NHL regular. He can't handle the puck and is too slow. at best, he'll be a injury call-up, which is what he is right now

I know you didnt say that. I just get sick and tired of nobody having any patience at all with our young defenseman. Including people in the organization.

Marshall is not an NHL capable defenseman and likely won't be one.

I agree. All these so called experts saying that a 22 year old kid is fodder. If not for all the injuries they would be learning their trade down on the farm.
Although he hasn't been as impressive as MAB (except his dance moves) I noticed his ice time has gone from an average of 10 minutes or so, but tonight he played less then 5. He's taken some penalties and has had some giveaways but that can be said about the entire defense this year. Why do you think Lavy is starting to bench him so much? I for one think he has been rather impressive overall.
I am more concerned with the minutes JVR played. Is he still injured?

I think its just that guys like Voracek and Simmonds currently outplaying him. Within this lttle streak going on, Voracek has been one of, if not, our best player.
Marshall, an emergency call up. MABs game has improved last year, this year and next year. i cant see us gutting the cupboard for weber, who may not even be available. suter is the guy that really interests me.see what our options are after july 1. unless some top 4 dman is avail for a fair price, we are not gonna overpay, then not much may happen. this team has a much larger-longer window to win us some cups. with 1-1st rounder, and 2 or 3 2nds in the draft, we can go bpa and end up with some more good young D, in this strong defensive draft. and congrats to temple on the newmexico bowl win.

I think the best defenseman that was drafted and trained by the Flyers in their entire history is Chris Therien. That's pretty bad when you have an organiztion that has been around for 40+ years and Chris Therien is the best you can do...
I don't know what it is. This team has landed many strong forwards and even a couple of goalies, but when it comes to D, they plain stink.
Give him a shot. And who says Bourdon is an NHL regular? Half of HF was about to declare him a non-prospect after his horrible year, some AHL healthy scratches, and a concussion. I'm not going to claim I expected Bourdon to do this well either, but to say that Marshall can't is just unreal.
What happened to Gus? Surely Marshall hasn't jumped him.
Pshhh. He's so November 2011. It's almost 2012 now. You gotta move your feet to keep up here. He's clearly too fragile and injury prone to ever amount to anything.
