Dec. 29 update: Couturier (head) likely to play tonight

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers...126&feedID=695

Quote:
As if the Flyers don’t have enough head injuries, rookie center Sean Couturier was struck on the left side of his head -- at the helmet -- by a shot Saturday and left the game. He could be concussed.

With 48.7 seconds left in the first period, Couturier saw Kimmo Timonen’s drive from above the left circle coming at him and turned as the puck hit his helmet. He went down on the ice and stayed down for a few minutes while under medical supervision.

Kimmo is a pro, he should of been able to avoid his head with the shot.

Can't wait for the few blaming Simmer to post this

Once a position of excess... What I'm worried about is long term effects from these -- and of course the well being of these guys, which certainly goes without saying -- Also the Organizational trickle-down and the Cap problems that would a even a healthy situated club... If not on LTIR both Players on IR as well as their replacements are counted against the Cap, and with LTIR players they effect any possible banking.

We may be looking at five or so more seasons of a near $5M LTIR Cap adjustment for Pronger, which kills banking strategy and Trade Deadline options... And possible long-term effects on some very, very talented players who may never reach their potential if future concussions follow them throughout their careers... Pronger and Giroux who are proven talent and Schenn and Couturier who are super prospects, not to mention the lost services of Lappy and even the tail end of what would have been Primeau's career.

No whining about how these have occurred, as they have been casted by fate... but plenty of future 'what-could-have-beens' possibly looming on the horizon. For the good of all involved we can only pray for Giroux, Schenn and Couturier to be able to continue their careers without any future effects... and Pronger to recover totally and finish his HHoF career and his current Flyers contract; a huge prayer in my sad opinion.

All obvious, I fully understand... and all very frustrating as well.

I'm not worried too much about Giroux, Schenn and Couturier down the road. I think people are being a little hypersensitive about concussions because of Crosby. The chance of one, two or all three having long term issues are low, but I guess you never know.

He might not have a spine anymore, but he'll get top line minutes with Jagr now. We do have to factor in Schenn's return to the line up though as well as how badly Couturier is injured.

If Roo and Schenn are done for the year, then it will be season cancel.

I don't understand how you can say that when they prevailing thoughts are that once there is one concussion the chances of another increases... and with that, the more concussions, the more the effects are compounded. Those three have had concussions... And just when is any activity okay? Schenn has been working out with his, as has Giroux not been inactive... Not to say any added effects were amassed, but at this point anything short of a total shutdown can have the possibility of making it worse.

Not to be a Negative Nelly but Lappy and Pronger were not thought to have a concussion until the PCS effects were too much to discount... No matter how careful teams are, the understanding of concussions and PCS is not very good at this point in time. Safe thing I'm sure is to shut down players... but even then after a long time of being shut down, you still can be set back when they return -- look a Crosby and Primeau, and Lappy for that matter.

My point is not that I'm saying that it will happen... I'm saying that it can happen... and since it is agreed that they have been concussed and have had PCS, the next concussion will most certainly be easier and have a compounded effect. I'm saying that fate has set the Flyers up for a possible set of problems, and if all or some of the worse happens, the Flyers will have gone from a sitting prey position to one of being behind the Eight Ball and scrambling to get a foothold due to Cap and lost high-end talent.

My hope is that this becomes a moot point.

Did any of our other guys go to the ER? Is this potentially more serious?

Wait wut? I like Schenn, but if he is done for the year, it really has nothing to do with our season, since he hasnt contributed in really anyway.

I'd think going to the hospital make it more likely that it's a broken jaw or something, no? No reason to rush to the hospital if it is a concussion.

Couturier is not going to join the team for the road trip.

Couturier has been ruled out at Colorado and at Dallas.

Don't you need a independent doc to sign off on returning to play not?
