It's almost time for the Red Bulls Salute and Spengler Cup.

Marty Turco, Akim Aliu, and Tyler Redenbach join EC Red Bulls Salzburg of the finals for the European Trophy.

Oddly, Turco could have played for Team Canada for the Spengler, but would have missed Christmas with his family, as the tournament starts that day, and the salute is wrapped up several days before then.

Cory Murphy is on Team Canada this year for the Spengler, however.

Canada's roster: http://www.spenglercup.ch/spenglercup/en/team.html?83

Red Bulls Salute website: http://www.redbullssalute.com/index.1.1.html

both sites I've linked to are the English versions.

Also, do you guys remember Ladislav Scurko? The former Flyer prospect who admitted to killing a ref? He's playing for HK Slovan Gelnica after his release.

Imagine reffing those games.

Keep in mind he's still only accused. If he were convicted that would be a career killer.

For those who need an expounding, let me give it a stab.

Scurko admitted to Slovakian police that he killed a referee. The punishment for murder in Slovakia is normally a 15-20 year prison sentence. Once the case got to court however, he plead 'not guilty', which with the slowness of the law, lead to an extended break for the case while they discover evidence, build their cases, etc.

The trial is expected to resume at some point, but it's unknown when, and that's partly why Scurko got released, as he hasn't been convicted, and the trial itself on hold. It's a different legal system there, but still a basic presumption of innocence, despite a confession to the police, as he may have been pressured by them into admitting to something he didn't do.

Kings fire Terry Murray, and replace him with interim head coach John Stevens.

Kurtis Foster also got traded to the Devils.

No way Thornton gets in the HOF at this point. What's he done? He's played a lot of games, but never lived up to the expectations. He was never 'the' elite center at any point, and rightly or wrongly, has the reputation of a choker, so why should he get in? Lindros needs to get in first before any discussion over Thornton can reasonably be made.

Don't know for sure what's going on and developing story and what not, but IF true, damn!!

DEVELOPING: Former #Bruins player and VS analyst Mike Milbury charged with assault on a 12yo at a youth hockey game in Brookline
Details

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/spor...83/detail.html

Quote:
Michael Milbury, who currently works as a hockey analyst for Versus NHL, was accused of assaulted a 12-year-old youth hockey player at the Dexter School Ice Rink in Brookline last week.
Milbury is an assistant coach of a local hockey team, and the alleged victim is a player from an opposing team.
Stupid ****. For some inexplicable reason he's handed a cushy job where he can show off his ineptitude and this is what he does.

The worst part is he was actually bragging about the shoe incident and even his tenure as GM of the Isles on TV.

To be fair, the kid was advocating the 1-3-1.

Umm...language issue, maybe? Assault = threatening someone with violence. Battery = an act of violence.

Milbury denies the charges. Through his attorney, he said he intervened in an altercation between his son and an opposing player.

Yeah, different sources reported different things. Some only mentioned assault, others even battery. From the police statement though:
Quote:
"Due to an incident that occurred at the Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink at the Larz Anderson Park in Brookline, Michael Milbury of Needham, MA, will be charged with 1 count of Assault and Battery on a Child, 1 count of Threats to Commit a Crime, and Disorderly Conduct"

So apparently, from another person at the game posting on a forum, MM's kid and an opposing player were chirping at one another all game long and being complete jerks to everyone. One parent said that MMs kid was doing "MMA on ice and he can't skate very well and is pretty bad at hockey."

So the game ends and the refs/parents/coaches agree to a shootout for fun. MMs kid and this other ****** chirp at one another and start to get into a frackas. Coaches/refs come onto the ice to sort it out and MM comes out and grabs the kid by the face mask and screams at him, "What did you say to my son?" Allegedly he picked the kid up and shook him pretty violently then dropped him on the ice.

MMs kid is allegedly bad at hockey and a bully. Wonder where he got that from...

Guess since Milbury acts like a 12 year old on TV he felt he was on a level playing field mentally.....

Where has the respect gone in hockey?

It used to be back in the day, you'd elbow a guy in the face when the ref wasn't looking, and say "Sorry old chap, just being sporting, you know." and your opponent with bloody mouth would try to say something to the effect of: "Why you scoundrel. That was out of line, I challenge you fisticuffs."

You'd break each others faces, pull each others hair, and after the game, get a beer with them. But 'oh no' athletes shouldn't drink alcohol because it's not good for them. That's the mentality these days.

stream of Linkopings v Salzburg

http://www.lshunter.tv/index.php?opt...pup&Itemid=327

There's no commentary whatsoever, and you can hear the crowd do their thing.

Freddy Norrena is in net for Linkopings and Turco for Salzburg.

Salzburg uses the same goal song as Philly. lol

Turco's not looking bad. He's still very active handling the puck, but I think he got entranced by Linkopings PP, which was pretty mesmerizing given the space the European rinks have. They're throwing them at him mostly from the blueline, which is partly a compliment to his team, but also I think Linkopings knows Turco is not used to the rink dimensions, and are trying to capitalize on that, which is how they got him on their second goal.

I've got to say, the camera work is fantastic. It's not just the standard views you get around the NHL. Probably more importantly, they're keeping the focus with the players on the ice, not some ******* in a suit. Or an ******* with a whistle. Why North American sports thinks they need dedicated coach cams, instead of using those cameramen for showing compelling angles of play, thereby making the sport more appealing to watch, I do not understand. *******s in suits probably.

They also do their job without doofy numbers on the front of the helmets.

Not hitting you over the head with unnecessary graphics is also pretty nice.

I think color commentary is nice, but it can ruin the viewing experience of replays. Instead of having the the color guy be 'in charge' of replays, so he can draw **** everywhere, just letting the guy on the knob make a replay look as awesome as possible is okay with me. Maybe commentators should be commentating around what they're showing, and not be so much in charge of what's shown. NA commentators use video as a tool to demonstrate their point, and when something's used as a tool, it loses a lot of what makes it interesting to watch. We like going to the movies more than we like sitting in a classroom.

I'm completely biased, as I want Roloson gone, but Turco made a glove save. I don't think Roloson has caught a puck in his glove the entire season.

Turco's also not playing like an old man, unlike some Rolosons we know...
