Characters are different too. Some people will just always say the same canned response, others will hint at what they mean and they'll imply the truth rather than say it.
It seemed to me like he just misheard the question as "Were you expecting something like this to happen/Jacques to be fired", as he was asked "sorry you just answered this" and likely the question was re-phrased slightly so he was all primed to give his exact same answer, realized the question had changed slightly, and then answered.
But of course all Habs fans would rather assume the most dramatic one, that he was about to spill the beans, Gauthier gave him the look of death from a hole in the wall where he spies on players, and he was scared into the PC answer, haha.
Anyway, apparently I'm alone in this, seemed harmless to me.
If you watch the Gorges and Cammalleri interviews, I think they tell a lot about the state of the dressing room without saying it directly.
Gorges hinted that a good chunk of the guys weren't playing for Martin anymore, and Cammalleri didn't really deny the question of the players' and coach's relationship eroding. Sounds like what lot of people suspected.
Gorges: "It doesn't matter whatever system is put in place, what matters is that players do what they have to do"... sounds like they were fed up with JM's stupid passive system

Not sure how you come to that conclusion with that quote... also, I'm not buying the idea the JM had lost the room. Seems to me that the players had showed up to play the last couple of games.
What I didn't like was how Gorges agreed that the system works... Even politically, that wasn't necessary. Does he really believe that? No it doesn't work, Josh. Hence why it's always a 1 goal game gamble or forced shootouts.

No, what it means is the players are the ones on the ice not performing, not the coach.
I'm pretty sure he thought the question was asked like "Were you expecting JM to get fired"
"No, etc"
THen realized his mistake lol
Looks at his head movement when he answers the initial "No, I wasn't really s...". He confirms that answer by moving his head left to right. When he changes his answer to "Yeah, I was surprised" he should be nodding his head up and down but he is still moving his head left to right (much more subtle but still visible).
I know this isn't a perfect method but given all indicators I am fairly confident he lied right there.
