hard to break your jaw when the puckhits you in the back of your head covered by the helmet.

Homer said on the Post game that they want make sure there is no problems... make sure no structural damage or other effects are present. (paraphrasing)

I think they are now snake bit and playing it as safe as possible... better safe than sorry... and there is nothing to lose by sending him to the ER after a straight on hard shot to the head.

Maybe he got a CT scan or an MRI to see if there was any skull damage

Holmgren's post-game interview is now up:

Reason for evaluation at hospital: "checking for damage to the skull or seeing if there is any internal damage."

Danny Briere spoke to Couturier between periods.

“He said he didn’t feel too bad, but not all that great, either,” Briere said. “They’re tough breaks. I hope we get all of them out of the way now so that by the playoffs, we’re at full strength.”

Holmgren said that Couturier’s baseline scores were similar to what he had in training camp.

“I think what they are checking for now is damage to his skull,” Holmgren said. “And taking a look to see if there is any internal damage.”

The Flyers have three players currently concussed and out of the lineup: Chris Pronger (out for season), Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn. None of these concussions involved a dirty play or questionable hit.

The speedy Couturier’s influence can’t be understated. He averages 13:03 minutes a night and is one of their top penalty killers, logging 3:05 a game. His shorthanded average has been higher than Giroux’s (2:50) because he picked up added minutes with Giroux out.

Holmgren said he was uncertain if the club will call up a player. Giroux and Schenn made the trip to Denver on Saturday night, but won’t play in Denver or Dallas.

“We’re missing a lot of bodies right now and it’s too bad it’s another centerman,” Jaromir Jagr said. “There’s nobody left at center. We got three concussed centermen. It’s not easy. We gotta battle through.”

Although the Flyers have three centers injured now, Holmgren wasn’t sure if he would call up a forward from the Phantoms.

“We do have some flexibility and Matt Read can play center,” he said. “Obviously, Schenn and Giroux are not options here for the near future. We’ll have to talk about that.”

It looks like our snarky comments were all wrong. Concussion is a virus, and it's extremely contagious.

Really Tim, REALLY?! Couturier is flat out slow haha. If he was fast, he'd be scary good.

Not necessarily ... could be bleeding, not damage to the brain itself.

Homer is bogged down now with these injuries, and has many more questions than answers... I don't believe he was weighing his words as he answered all the questions. Plus, I don't think he, nor anyone would want to use the term "brain damage"... which I believe concussions are a part of.

Right now, I'd have to think that his 'half full' mentality has to be getting taxed as he begins to think about looking out for the worse case possibilities at this point.

What a revolting development this is. sigh

Wouldn't you consider bleeding in the brain area to be brain damage? Brain damage doesn't have to be permanent, I'd think.

so when there is internal bleeding guess which organ is bleeding. No but in all seriousness it could just be the vascular system of the brain which is no big deal at all, that area doesnt need blood one bit.

Point being internal damage is a pretty fin big deal, so lets all pray its not that.

I always thought of brain damage as nerve damage, but maybe I'm wrong.

I agree it's very serious, but I think of brain damage as 'there are nerves that are dead and will never work again'.

Concussions are a type of brain damage. Any physical trauma to the brain is brain damage in a sense. Nerve damage is a broad term since your whole body has efferent and affernt nerves throughout the body.

This team is cursed. And the worst thing of all, they are all head injuries. FML.

I don't get it, If Giroux and Schenn aren't playing on Monday then what's the point of travelling with the team? Is it to see if they can handle the flight?

What parent in the U.S. is going to sign his or her kid up for hockey these days with all this talk of brain damage and concussions?

In Canada it's just what they do from age 2.

I would rather put it that way: The chance of one of the three having long term issues is high - "long term" in the sense that a second head shot within the next 24 months may lead to severe PCS, which is no definite career ender but those players normally never ever reach the same level of play again.
