Oilers and Lightning

It looks like both teams here are in need of a "deck shuffle"

Oilers offer you, Ales Hemsky and Magnus Paajarvi and a 2nd

for

Ryan Malone and Steve Downie

Bad for us... Hemsky is one of the most injury prone player in the league and Downie with Malone is our only toughness. And MPS is really bad this season

If you change one of Malone/Downie for another player maybe, we would have 0 toughness

Paajarvi is awful, so no. And Hemsky spends more time on the trainer's table than on the ice.

That's the worst proposal I've read in a while. Lock thread.

On a side note, Paajarvi was just assigned to the Oklahoma City Barons / AHL.

I tried that once and practically got cross-checked across the head. But then again, at that time Omark was their up and coming all-star. He hasn't played a lot this year - not sure if he's been hurt or scratched.

He was demoted at the beginning of the year. He sucks. My comment really was tongue in cheek lol.

Omark was sent to OKC (and not really happy about it) and has since been injured. He has 7 points in 7 games in the A.

They can keep both of those players. Omark is incredibly overrated and has done nothing other than youtube worthy shootout goals to merit even a second look. He'll be back in Europe unless he can mature and dedicate himself to hockey.

lol....wasn't sure. Back then I thought it would be great to get Harju and Omark together but Harju didn't like it here (or at least the AHL) and then Omark did his act in the shootout and acted like an ass while he was up, so it's good it didn't happen.....we needed team players.

I'm always amazed at how so many proposals want BOTH Downie and Malone. Rarely do you see just one.

I'm not seeing either are untradeable (although Malone is tough with the NMC), but for a top6 type guy with that kind of grit, I think they're often undervalued.

I'm not opposed to letting Malone go, but only when Ashton is ready to compete. I think Downie gets a nice contract to stay with BFF Stammer (3-4 years)

I think Downie stays. I'd keep him for the BFF #91 factor like you mentioned. I do think he's phenomenal for other players in the room as well.

Pros:

I believe Hemsky could be filthy with Stamkos. Should at the minimum be able to play a more important top 6 role than Malone consistently manages.
Gets out of Malone's term.
Offseason flexibility/re-sign Hemsky (or not) based on fit, more money to address D and Goal issues if not.
Paajarvi and 2nd are decent consolation prizes moving forward if Downie isn't in the long term plan as much as all us fans hope he is (myself included).

Cons:
Costs Downie.
Hemsky's health.
Trade does nothing to address the aforementioned D or Goal issues in the here and now.
Takes away too much grit.
Paajarvi's muddled early development.
Costs Downie.

In the end, I think we could get returns that better address our needs in trades for either (or a few other potentially available forwards). I would be hesitant to include Downie in any trade unless it was as a piece to acquire a legit top-pairing Defenseman. His value to the Lightning specifically is significantly more than his cost. His point production and Restricted status mean he'll likely continue to provide that value through his next contract also.

In the end, pass on the trade but would be open to continuing discussions based around Malone for components mentioned in this proposal or others in the Oilers system.
