Forsberg: Sweden didn't "try their hardest" against SVK in '06

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/jaakiekko/...436149486.html

Url is in Finnish but the main point is that Forsberg says to the SVT News that they intentionally lost to the Slovaks to gain easier path to finals for Sweden.

Forsberg says that this is one of a kind situation and blames the system for forcing them to do such a decision.

So, Forsberg states the obvious? And Finnish tabloids spin a story... *yawn*.

It's not going to change the results of that tournament either way so there's really no reason to care, especially since the big "reveal" is non-existent.

The memory still pains, but this dog has been shot and buried eons ago. No need to revive it.

A lot of people think the University of Minnesota Duluth did this last year in the league playoffs. They went on to win the National Title.

Same deal where they got a better seeding if they lost.

Eh? Was that supposed to be a secret?

I still remember how pissed off everyone over here was back then.

Though considering that we put Karol Križan into net (officially because he played in SEL and therefore knew Swedish players) in that game, our intentions probably weren´t all that innocent either. I doubt either team wanted to win that game.

This ruined the tournament for Slovakia since because of this they had to play their worst possible opponent at the quaterfinals.

Everyone knew that, it was a wise decision. That was the only game when i wished we would have lost.

The worst thing about this is that Forsberg announces this publicly.

You mean they didn't start Tellqvist instead of Lundqvist because he was the better goalie!?!

should he lie about the obvious? or give some mysterious "we dont talk about that" comment. Nobody gives a **** anymore so why not just say it.

Just watched the video on SVT.se where Forsberg spoke himself. He did not say they lost intentionally, he did say that the team was unmotivated to play hard because of the risk of injuries and a hard opponent in the quarters. The coaches did not order them to lose.

Blame the system for making losing a desirable outcome.

I think it was more or less a silent understanding among the best players that winning would just hurt the team and they acted accordingly. I don't blame them.

Everyone know this already, and it was obvious when the players were interviewed during the intermissions as well. No one on the team even made an effort of trying to hide it.

This has been taken out of context, Forsberg never said that the team lost intentionally, but that there was a few of the players who talked before the game about taking it easy to avoid injuries.

However, if you look at some events in that game, it's quite clear that Sweden did not go for victory in the game. And I think a lot of other teams would do the same in a similar situation.

Intentionally losing is not fair play and the swedes made a mockery of the whole Olympic ideal -so they should be disqualified and their medals taken away from them, hopefully the IIHF has the balls to do it

Yeah, I have absolutely no problem with this. Do what it takes to win gold. That's the goal.

This was a secret?

Very, very unsportsmanlike thing to do. Against the whole idea of the Olympic games.

Pathetic to say the least.

Actually if it was really fair play losing would mean a harder road to the final
