Let's Talk About Hockey (The Original New York Team)

Today NHL hockey in New York is the Rangers and the Islanders. Before that, it was just the Rangers. But NHL hockey in New York goes back further than the Rangers when you take into account the original New York team: The Americans.

I bought a New York Americans hat from the NHL store about 2 years ago. I love that hat

Nice overview. Enjoyed seeing some unfamiliar photos too. Loved the 60s shots of MSG in particular.

Remember speaking to a felllow who played for the Amerks and lived in a hotel that Big Bill also used to house some of his female employees. Rookie got his eyes opened that winter.

Ya, quite the piece of work was Dwyer. He apparently tried to rig games with the Goal Judges calling goals if the puck was within an inch of the red-line but didnt cross the line. Legend has it that one of them spent half a game heckling Ottawa Goalie Alex Connell so mercilessly that Connell skated back & butt ended the guy in the face. Had to be ushered out of MSG by Police Escort to the train station, smuggled into the baggage car in order to keep life & limb together... Bill also "secretly" bought the Pittsburgh Pirates NHL franchise, installing a puppet owner ex-boxer pug of his, calling the shots from NY. Team moved to Philly for a year thereafter then folded. Dangerous guy, as in very dangerous during his prime. Died penniless after the government had gotten done with him. Lost $20,000 in craps, a single roll of the dice that he'd borrowed from Red Dutton to keep the Amerks afloat.

Hey ho...

It's crazy how difficult it is to find pictures of MSG III considering it's arguably the most famous sporting arena of all time.

I also found it interesting that despite his infamy, I could find no actual pictures of Dwyer anywhere I looked.

Nope. No photos' that I could find either, team shots usually including the owner but not in this case. He was "well known" to the NYPD & the FBI, yer "Revenue Men" & Elliot Ness; jailed, Sent up the River for a couple of years so if you have access to them, I'd try old MugshotAlly, New York State Prison Records n' whatnot...
