Wild Call Up Eden Prairie Native Chad Rau (TM)...oh and Ortmeyer too

The Wild have now recalled Chad Rau and Jed Ortmeyer from Houston while reassigning Cody Almond.

I don't care for Ortmeyer. I think he is really redundent with Warren Peters. Granted Almond didn't show much and was given a huge chance with Cullen missing a game and now Koivu.

Rau on the other hand i'm excited to see. I have been calling for him to get a chance for a while now. He is going to be a more skilled guy at center. He won't wow you defensively, but he is solid in his own end and can hang onto the puck. He is speedy and if i'm right he is going to impress.

I've seen Rau too many times to even get marginally excited for a marginal AHL/ECHL player. Just sayin'... don't get your hopes up too high.

Moved to its own thread.

Seriously though, at a certain point the "called up to the Wild" players in Houston are going to outweigh the "not called up to the Wild" players.

Looking forward to seeing Rau. I just wish it was under better circumstances. I'm pretty meh on Ortmeyer.

Rau was a beast in the USHL playing for Des Moines and then in college at CC. His junior year scored 28-14-42. Was consistently a 30+ point guy in college. His first year in Houston put up 19-19-38 in 79 games. Last year 13-27-40 in 60 games.

If your too lazy to read it just talks about how Rau has a knack for scoring and great awareness in the offensive zone. It also talks about how his skating could use work but we'll see how he has progressed since this analysis. He is only 5'11 but he plays bigger. I think he will be a surprise player for us and may impress a few of you. He has always flown under the radar and has finally being given a real opportunity. Hopefully we get to see him play.

Where does Houston get its replacements when Minnesota is calling up guys left, right and center? I never knew before, but after all of these injuries I'm kind of curious now.

We signed Bob McKenzie's son when the Wild started to need to call up players, not sure where he was playing before though.

Houston can recall players from their ECHL farm team.

He played with the Canes' AHL team last season. (Charlotte Checkers)

So where is that ECHL team getting its players from?

And a scorer huh? Wonder what the lines will look like in Vanny.

My bad, the Wild/Aeros have no ECHL affiliate for some reason. It's weird to see some ECHL teams are independant.

So, I guess the Aeros have to sign non professional players to an AHL contract. Here's the Aeros roster right now.

Hey, I think Rau will come out swingin' wearing the 36.

Former Wild 36s:

Sly Blouin
Alex Henry
Big John Scott

Not a bad number.

So, what do we have now, the Minnesota Aeros with their farm team, the Houston Wild?

My first ever pair of elbow pads were Chad's that I got from Play It Again sports lol. Loved watching him growing up and playing for EP. Glad to see he at least gets a shot in the big leagues.

Just thought I would put some side by side stats for our college free agents forwards who have recently gotten called up. Pretty interesting when you look at it.

Rau is a year younger than Palmer and same age as Wellman and he put up comprable numbers to both in college in a tougher WCHA conference. The only real disparity is Wellman's first year AHL numbers because he put up those numbers in about 41 games

Wellman
Freshmen: 11g 22a 33p
Sophomore: 23g 22a 45p
First AHL year: 14-21-35

Palmer
Freshmen: 11-19-30
Sophomore: 10-25-35
Junior: 8-19-27
Senior: 18-27-45
First AHL Year: 9-19-28

Rau
Freshmen: 13-17-30
Sophomore: 14-17-31
Junior: 28-14-42
Senior: 18-19-37
First AHL Year: 19-19-38
