I suspect they will not make a major move at all, due to the uncertainty of the future CBA. If Giroux, Schenn, and Couterier all come back healthy, and the team looks like it can compete for the Cup, they might pick up a defensive rental.

None of the list. There is no need to panic and make a rushed move. They have to wait and see if Giroux, Schenn or Couts are coming back and when. They will have Pronger's cap hit to find a replacement for him.
There are a few guys who could help in different ways and might be available. They need to wait for another month and see how it's going.

I believe this is what they're trying to do as well. A veteran dman should be helpful, but we're not looking to trade away any of our roster players. Pick(s) and/or prospect(s) for a rental dman. Then we try our damndest for Suter in the summer (assuming he's not available this season, and isn't signed in the end by the Predators).

So why would you trade him while his value is low? We just traded our captain for this kid how bout seeing him play before we ship him out of town. Carle is the one to go he won't be on the team next year anyway. And I don't think I'd be opposed to moving JvR either.

Because he still has the special tag on him right now and some GM may buy in to acquire him. He still has decent value right now.
We don't necessarily need him with our abundance of young centers and we would probably get less in return for him after a lost season (which he is headed for by all indications).
I don't see how we could dispense Carle right now. JVR stays just because Homer won't dare to trade another face of the franchise right after signing him to an extension.

Agreed. Look down the line at the D, Timonen is gone, Carle is gone, Pronger is potentially done and even if he's back I don't see that he can be the same player he was just because of injuries and age.
I think you can roll this season with a rental D but I think long term we'd be screwed.
I'd rather get it done now even if if makes a bit of a mess in other places. Personally, see what you can get with a JVR + Schenn + Mesz / Carle package (and resign Carle if it's Mesz). Simmonds plays JVR's role, Schenn has barely played and wont be missed, you've upgraded the D we have massively and then use a pick to get a rental and see where Pronger is at the end of the season. The core of you special team guys stay so patching any holes at UFA is gonna just be cheap fowards to play very few mins...
Schenn's value is at an all time low and the D needs any help it can get so moving Schenn or a D-man now would not be wise imo. There is absolutely no reason to move jagr, couturier or jake in my eyes so that only leaves Briere and other. I would love to move briere but he's got the NMC.

I like this idea a lot, no need to go crazy and start trading players away, plus I believe the other teams in the league know we're in a tight spot with all these players down, which might not give us leverage to get something decent, sit tight and let them play through this and hope for the best waiting for Roo to get back, then Couts and the rest of the calvary
