Staal participated in drills last week when the Rangers skated in St. Louis for 3 days. The Rangers had a short scrimmage on Wednesday and Staal participated. Staal was wearing a no contact sweater. Why change the color if his status is still the same? No contact.

Exactly. That's what I don't get about Katie's tweets. Change him from non-contact sweater to the regular sweater, but he's still no contact? I'm sure there's a reason for it, it's just not clear to me what that could be.

Well, okay that eliminates my theory. Except did Staal participate in drills with the team? All the video I've seen shows Staal participating in drills with the other injured players, not with the whole team.

I wonder if they cleared him for normal practice (i.e. physical play) but not actual hitting in the sense of throwing body checks.

Yea its bothering me that hes wearing the red jersey instead of the orange non contact jersey. Maybe they havent washed the orange ones lol. But I dont expect him cleared for contact, it would have been said. In the end, another good sign I guess.

The Rangers skated as a team last Tuesday here. They skated as a team in St. Louis on Wednesday and Friday. Staal participated in those skates. The various tweets indicated Staal participated in the drills and skated with Erixon as his partner. He skated with other injured players on Thursday and Saturday. Rupp and Wolski went from wearing no contact sweaters to being cleared for contact and wearing the red. Wolski was just cleared late last week.

None of that answers why Staal is not wearing the orange non-contact sweater. My guess is that they are in the wash.

At practice, 15 forwards, including Wolski-Christensen-Avery spare line, and 7 D, including Bickel and Staal, in same red jersey as others.

no one has talked to the ranger staff since saturday night the reporters won't get to them until AFTER today's skate. its very probable that staal was cleared this morning for contact. he may be alot closer than we think

Well, "regular red jersey" to me means what all the other players are doing in practice, which includes contact.

Thanks for the backup, nyr2k2.

I would be shocked if he were cleared for contact before the end of the year. That said it would certainly be welcome news. I still don't see him back in the lineup until early February.

Highly doubt that he was cleared for contact. It's still nice to hear he is practicing with no setbacks.

why would any of you be shocked?

he feels great he's skating hard and they give you a non contact jersey for a reason. so guys see who they're practicing against and dont' hit them.

i betcha he's been cleared.

Wow if he was cleared for contact that would be amazing news either way he's progressing more quickly than I anticipated.

Question, I know many people on here get so defensive of staal as our top defensemen and all, while others say trade him. But heres my question, Does anybody think staal wont be that same defenseman that can take on anybody 1 on 1, shutting down ovi, malkin etc. Also, will he be the same marc staal who was our top d-man and one of the best in the nhl. A part of me feels like he wont jump right back into that #1 guy, or at least Im weary about it I guess. The whole crosby going down again scares the crap out of me.

Maybe he's "kind of" cleared for contact because they want to test him out slowly. What I mean is that the team was told to go easy on him, but the doctors aren't too worried if he does get hit once or twice by a player not paying attention.

Honestly, he doesn't need to jump right back into being that #1 guy he was before the injury. Girardi has stepped up and shown he can fill his shoes, I would think Torts is going to ease Staal into his minutes the first few weeks he gets back in order to protect his long term health and the short term bumps.

He's not going to jump right back in and he might be tentative at first with taking hits and stuff, and yeah, he'll probably get eased into the lineup and the decision on whether to take apart the McDonagh/Girardi pair will be made down the road

I really wish one of Del Zotto, Staal, and McDonagh played the right side...
