Budaj vs Black Hawks

Punishment to Price or just giving him some rest? Considering we desperately need two points, is this the right thing to do now?

Thoughts?

Punishment? Budaj's ass must be tired from sitting on the bench.

Bring it, Peter.

With back-to-back games on Wed/Thurs maybe Randy flipped a coin.

I knew Budaj would get a start in those back2back games, but...

Well I thought the #1 Price would get the start against the best NHL team at the moment.

And Budaj would have been in the net against Winnipeg... So we have a chance for 2 wins.

Whatever... If Budaj can steal this, Cunney is a genius, and if we lose, he's soooooooo bad.

Budaj is on pace for 10 games played this season.

Do we even need a back up goalie?

I miss those days when Halak used to steal us a couple of games here and then...

This is the thing I don't get about people. I'd rather start the good goalie against the worse team for the "guaranteed" win than take the risk of losing both by starting your backup against a lesser team.

Would be nice if Price stole us a few games in the next week. We need something to get back on track.

Well that's not a winner attitude. I aim 2 for 2.

Outside of his playoff run, Halak didn't do that on any more of a regular basis than Price did/does.

Well, generally he has played well lately, but not enough to win. He has let in 3 or more goals in the last 4 games, and he's not stealing any wins for us like he is capable of, even if our defence has been shabby at best recently.

Not really a surprise, we have a better shot at beating the Jets so might as well put Price against them

WAT?

Halak faced 40+ shots a night and won us a bunch of games in the regular season that year. The playoffs were just his introduction to the rest of the NHL world.

Price hasn't done that in ages, not saying that Price has been bad, he's been solid, but nowhere near as miraculous as Halak was that year.

There are other players that deserve punishement before price. So to me punishement cant be a motive behind this. This is a rest/budaj has experience playing in the west type of move.

Halak was better than Price that year and won the starting job, but he wasn't nearly as miraculous all season long as he was in the playoffs. He started most of the games down the stretch and couldn't buy us a win against bottom-feeders to lock down a playoff spot (not blaming him exclusively mind you but he was the guy between the pipes after all). It's pure revisionist history to suggest he was on another level for the entire year.

Hell, Price's regular season last year was easily better than Halak's of 09-10, so there's really no reason to pine for Halak.

I think he's pining for Price actually stealing us a game. He's kept us in them this year, but hasn't outright stolen many (if any).

Then why bring up Halak at all?

particularly when that team is in direct competition for a playoff spot and the win could ensure you have the edge in the season series for a potential tie-breaker.

Since the Blackhawks are better than the Habs and they're playing at home they would be favored regardless of whether Price or Budaj is in goal. In that case it makes sense to use Price tomorrow.

Price deserves punishment? For what, being amazing game in and game out with barely any rest? No, I think Cunney is doing one of the following or both

1) Feeling that if we beat Chicago it'll be a huge steal, he'd rather go with the lesser goalie in the more certain loss and the stronger one where we are more likely to pick up 2 pts (Price has been stellar yet we keep losing by a goal...that would be likely to happen again)
2) Putting the onus on the defense to really man up and play above their heads knowing they don't have Carey to rely on

Budaj has been alright, but he definitely needs good D support. No, excellent D support (from everyone really)
