Are there more concussions or are they just looking for them more?

Pronger (out for season/playoffs), Giroux, Michalek (Ottawa), I think Leino is out now.

Staal (NYRanger),Letang are still out.

There are a few that have had a concussion and come back this season. Fisher and Erat each already had one this year.

I do think the numbers are up also because of better reporting by the players of their symptoms. And better medical testing. By players coming forward and realizing it's OK to admit they are injured the doctors can better diagnose and the players can get treatments that will help them more fully heal (though with a concussion there's not much to do but wait and see how the player feels day by day).

I think it's definitely a case of better diagnosis methods are leading to an increase in numbers moreso than an increase in the number of concussions...

Kelly Chase pointed out last night on On The Fly that where we are used to seeing NFL players return after a week from a concussion, that's because they don't have guaranteed contracts and are fighting week to week for their jobs. In the NHL they do have guaranteed contracts and are doing a much better job protecting the players long term even if it means you take a hit in the short term.

Hockey is a high speed collision sport...players are getting bigger, stronger, faster every year, but equipment has only recently started improving. Still a long way to go, but they're making progress.

I have no responsibilities until 9am Monday morning when I go back to work. No papers to research/write. No exams for which to study. No lectures through which to sit. Nothing but a family Xmas brunch tomorrow.

What the hell am I supposed to do now?

1. dont you have a girlfriend?
2. if not,(or even if you do and shes a good sport) purchase your preferred alcoholic beverage in the greatest quantity you can afford, and
3. consume said beverages up to and during the game saturday
4. sleep it off sunday

or, as an alternative, buy or rent national lampoons christmas vacation and laugh your ass off, preferably while drinking the above mentioned beverages.

Is barry close to any milestones? I'm getting a video ready for just the right moment, and was just curious is there is anything on the horizon.

He's going to pass Burns, B. Sutter, for games coached.

He's going to pass T. Murray, Sather, and possibly Burns in Coaching wins

1) Yes, but she is out of town for the holidays.
2) that is the plan for tomorrow, and she has put up with my drunk ass a few times before
3) see above
4) I think you know where I'm going with this

Something tells me Christmas Vacation will make an appearance tomorrow, too, if Johnius has anything to say about it.

I got a higher grade in Arabic than I got in English (though by only a few tenths of a point). How the hell does that happen?

Why bother taking Arabic? That part of the world understands English when accompanied with a firearm.

It's more for potential money than for communication. I figure with a law degree and being fluent in Arabic I can at least find government work

Yeah but guys who shoot Arabs suspected of being terrorists might, and I'll still have to be able to order coffee and some type of meat other than lamb on my lunch breaks (though I do love me some lamb sandwiches)

I've got these, they're all pretty good. It took a while to warm up to Fleet Foxes, but it's an exceptional record. Seems like they had a much more unorthodox rhythm section on Helplessness Blues, and it worked out really well for them.

My favorite album of the year, though, is Mirror Traffic from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. It's the closest thing to a new Pavement record that we're ever going to get. I loved it.

Also liked:

The Rip Tide, Beirut
It's A Corporate World, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Parallax, Atlas Sound
Wasting Light, Foo Fighters (their best material in a very long time)
Blood Pressures, The Kills

There is always that point in a relationship where you think, "You know, this one could be a keeper." I just had mine.

For those of you who haven't heard, there is an uproar in Montreal over naming Cunneyworth interim head coach. He doesn't speak French, and this is a pretty big deal around there. Something that should come of no surprise, even government officials have chimed in. (More here: http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/73...uebec-official)

My girlfriend, who could not have cared less about hockey when we first started dating, has tried to take some interest in the sport. She watches with me sometimes. She puts up with me talking about it. Hell, I even showed her some interviews with Bryzgalov, and she absolutely adores him for his personality.

Anyway, I was telling her about this whole Montreal coaching controversy via text (she is out of town for Xmas), and she responded with, "It's only game. Why you heff to be mad?"

Keeper

I usually shoot them with artillery or drop a bomb on them .. it makes for better video.

And leaves less evidence... well, unless you actually make a video.
