Of course he does. You said that a while ago so it's obviously true.

Anyway, pretty decent first game for Stu. He made a few nice plays out there.

Ah yea Nigel Williams...he made my team once in NHL 10. Even that was a miracle

Nice analysis on an overlooked deal.

When we called up Stu Bickel, I was told that he was an ECHL-caliber defenseman and awful.

Lesson from all this? Posters on HF need to stop with the wild exaggerations about how bad players are. Oh, and people on our board can't judge defensive talent for ****.
This man speaks the truth.

Am I the only one in the World who likes Woywitka and thinks he's a serviceable 7th who can start a few games in case of injury?

His ice time has been steadily going down. Gotta think he'll either be waived or benched once everyone is healthy. Woywitka is not a NHLer on a good team. He's only here due to injuries, anyway.

I think I may change this thread to a defensive fill-ins appreciation thread. WOuld be nice to be able to talk about Stralman, Woywitka, Eminger, Bickel, Erixon, etc.

I actually don't mind him as the 6th defenseman.

It was a decent move, but far from one of his best. Bickel was solid, and Williams apparently was a cancer, so we seem to have got the better end of the deal. But I doubt this move will have any larger significance for the future of this team, so I wouldn't overrate a minor move like this.

No. He has a small cult following.

I'd rather have Christensen on the team than Woywitka. Woywitka serves a purpose now due to injury.

I like Jeff as well. He's servicable, can step in and play the #6 role. One bad play doesnt define a player. He has played good other than that.

In all reality, any time I get to make a thread ******** on Nigel Williams is a good time for me.
OT - Strudwick is in Sweden now playing for my brothers team (GM). He has been doing OK I hear, a mentor for a very young team. Apparently Mikael Nylander will be going to Södertälje too now. At least that is the rumor. Will find out more tommorrow when I fly to Sweden for Xmas...

Our defensemen are as good as the forwards on their line play and how good a job our team does of

A. Making saves off mistakes (Hank)

and

B. Avoiding heavy forecheck pressure.

Stralman struggles against a fast Devils attack tonight where Bickel looked confident. You dont have to be fast as a dman on the Ranger with the kind of team defensive scheme that they play. It is a bonus, but Bickel fits this system as a 3rd p air guy better than Stralman does, certainly.

That one soft play that lead to a goal is the only big mistake that comes to mind that he's made this season. He played his role well and quietly. Everything's blown up when he makes a mistake because he's a temporary player...or a plug.

Well, he was acquired to be a depth defenseman. He's serving his purpose and he's been fine in his limited capacity. I'm not a "fan," per se, I just thinking you're being unreasonably harsh in your evaluation of his game. Nothing more.

It is absolutely amazing to me that Torts and Sather have been able to throw together a defense since the beginning of the season. Getting more out of multiple players than we all though was possible this season (MDZ, Eminger, McDonagh) and grabbing players in smart deals like Stralman, Woywitka, Bell, Bickel who have provided depth that has been badly needed this season.

And furthermore, I like Steve Eminger even better. I'll take him on my 3rd pair any day of the week and twice on Friday.

Steve Eminger has filled his role well too.

Don't mind Woywitka and Eminger.

They're 5-6-7th defenseman. I don't expect much.

That's a little excessive. Woywitka knows his role as a #6 guy and he does a decent job at it. Are there better #6 options? Of course but enough with this he belongs in the AHL crap. He's serviceable and that's good enough for most teams for a #6. Stralman on the other hand could learn a thing or two about defense from Woywitka. There's a guy who belongs in the AHL.

I was very impressed with Bickel tonight. He looked very calm and poised for his first game. And he picked up a point.

See here is where I think people have to temper their expectations for all of these guys. If they had no holes in their games, they would be top-4 d-men. Normally its a consistency issue.

that has been a problem with Stralman for years. he has a few good games, gets cocky, and then has a few bad games where he forgets to use his body positioning on defense.

Woywitka has spurts of solid games followed by a game where he is caught flat-footed and beaten.

These guys all have holes. It doesn't mean they are AHL d-men.

Woywitka and Eminger probably aren't worthy of being 5/6 defensemen league-wide, but even if you discredit their talent, you have to admire their ability to play within a system that works (as well as give credit to Torts/Sullivan/etc for sticking with a system that lets guys like this be worthwhile).
