Was pretty boss of him to pull out chara for 5 minutes...about the only thing that game (vs Boston) that didnt suck entirely.

I'm pretty sure that waiving him won't do any good since no one will want him. He isn't an Eager or Carcillo type player that someone would want to trade for possibly, he's old with limited everything (play skills, ability to fight, and is mostly a locker room type of guy I think).

Somewhere around 34 straight year without a cup people wised up that the era of the enforcer is dead.

I don't think him being traded is likely but a team looking to hit the cap floor without paying the full cap hit may be willing [maybe a Florida or Tampa, talk about a retirement gift].

Yeah okay, makes sense, but some teams still carry enforcers.

not only is his cap hit 500k too much, but he also got a 3 year deal. there is no justification to it. NONE.
500k to a cap strapped team like the Flyers is significant. it isnt "just" 500k
nmind that the guy is ****ing worthless.

The Flyers have stated that since they play in our division they will always try to have an enforcer. At the time of Homer signing Shelley they had no other options(Rinaldo was not close then). They may have paid 200K to 300K too much per year or so but in managements mind they needed him to protect our players. We don't know who was bidding for his services either, so anyone could have drove the price up from 900K a year to 1.1 mill a year(of course that's just a hypothetical.)

Now with the emergence of Rinaldo, and hopefully Tom Sestito somewhere down the line, they realize Shelley isn't needed anymore. I feel like this will happen at some point this year or the end of camp next year.

I agree with almost all that you say - this explains the general need and why they were going to sign an UFA enforcer.

But at the end of the day it is just plain dumb to sign him to a 3 year deal! This is a looong period of time in which you can easily find a cheaper and more capable replacement within the organization and or on the market....

I dont mind having tough guys so long as they can play. See Brandon Prust and Shawn Thornton.
Both will drop the gloves when the time is right and are better hockey players then Shelley. Oh and they are MUCH better hockey players then Shelley as well at a better cap hit.
Holmgren's brilliance never stops to amaze me.

I don't mind have tough guys at all, I don't care if they "can play" but three years at 34 was a major issue and should never have happened.

To be fair, it is possible that had Homer not spent money on Shelley, he could have spent it on someone who would actually be worse.

So when exactly did Holmgren insult your mother and piss on your dog?

Although I really don't like the contract almost every team in the NHL has a contract that is bad(not liked by the fans at least). I am happy that ours is only for 1.1 million and not 4 million or so

He's now the 15th forward when they are health.

Giroux, Jagr, Hartnell
Briere, JVR, Voracek
Simmonds, Couturier, Read
Talbot, Schenn, Rinaldo
Harry Z
Sestito

Maybe Holmstrom even if he gets sent down between stints.

It's too much money for a 15th, I don't care what kind of character he brings.

People overrate the need for teams to get to the floor, something neither Florida nor Tampa Bay will have any trouble with next year.

Every called up rookie was better.
Let him kick Dubinsky ass and send him packing.

Be done with it already. Enough.

I take that back, best contract ever. I'm disgusted at this new anti-goon Philly mentality. 3 years, well deserved.

There's a difference between useful goons and useless goons. Shelley is a useless goon, a leftover relic from a dead age of hockey. The instigator rule made enforcers useless. Look at Boston; that's the new age of toughness. Hartnell, Simmonds, our 4th Line, Asham, Richards, Lappy, etc. Those are the guys you get to make your team tough; Guys who bring the grit, will stand up for teammates, AND can play, not useless slugs like Shelley or Cote who play minimal minutes, can't really keep up, and only have a use if someone feels like fighting them.
