Gomez sporting Koivu's number

This is just plain out WRONG. KOIVU was the heart of team for many years. And not only does get let go, but they give another guy his jersey number instead setting it aside to retire to the rafters?

A player needs to win a couple of cups and win some awards to get retired in Montreal. More select club than the hall of fame.

Koivu wouldn't make it in the Hall of Fame either.

This thread is two years too late.

**** Gomez. I said it when he first took the number and I say it now. Gomez deserves zero chances after pulling that ****.

Yup, hence why he'll never get retired.

I admire Koivu but his career and stay with the Habs is more about ''what could have been'' than ''what was''. I don't know if this makes sense.

I think the biggest disgrace is Gomez sporting a Habs jersey, be it with Koivu's number or any other...

I'm not usually one to get irrationally upset about things like numbers, but #11 is such an iconic number for our team, it represents so much, and it should be retired one day. The fact that a floating, worthless, loser of a player like Scott Gomez is allowed to wear it is really disgraceful. I don't know what's worse, that the team is okay with it, or that he himself was comfortable with not only choosing to take that number, but to specifically change from 91 to 11.

#11 is Saku Koivu.

Gomez with the #11 is a disgrace.

Does the OP really care or is he just a Preds/Isles fan welcoming the Habs to the "sucky club" of hockey teams?

He actually waited before switching to #11, out of respect of Koivu.

Never been the biggest Saku fan but I agree, it turns my stomach everytime I see Gomez with it.

I loved Koivu greatly, but there's a whole lot of former Habs that deserve that honor more than he does and haven't yet been retired.

Gomez had an ok first year with the habs. Last season he sucked, and this year he's injured, which makes me wonder whether he was even healthy his second season to begin with.

I loved Koivu, but for Christ sake, it is just a number. One that doesn't deserve to be retired, to be honest.

As one poster just said, I have more problem seeing what's on the front of Gomez's jersey than anything on the back. Really I would prefer that logo to change. To a bulldog, or something else, just not the CH.

Koivu's number should be in the rafters?

I actually support this. Why not?

Markus Naslund and Trevor Linden didnt win the cup but their numbers were retired.

Yep and he wore #91. Suits Gomez much better tbh.

Have you compared the Vancouver Canucks' history with the Montreal Canadiens'?

Steve Shutt, Jacques Lemaire, Guy Carbonneau and Toe Blake all make better cases than Saku Koivu. Out generation is just selfish and thinks their favorite players are as worthy as other generations' greats. That's not how it works though.

It does hurt to compare the blood and guts spilled under that number with what we've seen from Gomez up to now...

is retiring a number about being a HOF player, and having super star stats, and cup rings?

What about something like longest serving captain in team history?

He put in many years here, for better or worse, and as much as it's very easy to forget this era, it's a considerable amount of time.

If we don't ever win cups I am still in favour to retiring 1 or 2 numbers for player(s) in a given 10 - 15 year window.

Sadly for Koivu, his career as a Habs is more commitment than accomplishment.

He's still my all time favorite Hab.

Gomez is a ****, as others said he just don't deserve to wear the bleu-blanc-rouge. The day he's gone I drink to the point I forget he ever played here.
