Normally I'd be ecstatic about this news, but I refuse to after hearing Crosby re-injured himself.

Add that to the fact that our defensemen have been dropping like flies, I'll be nervous every time Marc steps on the ice.

agreed. crosby finally coming back then being sidelined again has me scared. i won't feel comfortable about staal until he's played symptom free for at least 30 or so games.

The good news is David Perron looked very normal the other night and didn't shy away from contact. There are examples of both post concussion return scenerios. Let's hope Marc is more like Perron than Cindy.

I really wish one of Del Zotto, Staal, and McDonagh played the right side...
Hopefully, but he can't play tentative... When you try to protect yourself in situations like this, that is when you end up actually getting hurt. Make the same plays and we have to hope for the best... If he's back on the ice for us, he has to fully commit to the idea that he can't be hurt again. If he does get hurt, then it just sucks. Part of being good in sports is not getting injured.

Marc Staal came off the ice sweating and smiling today, going through one of his hardest skates yet along with extras Sean Avery, Erik Christensen and fellow injured player Wojtek Wolski after the regular portion of the morning skate, which he also participated in.

Staal said he feels stronger on his skates and that he has more endurance as he continues to build to a return from post-concussion symptoms.

I feel like a hockey player again, said Staal, before I asked whether hes at the point where hes not worrying about a recurrence of headaches. Its definitely getting a lot better. I feel better through the whole workout. Afterwords, it doesnt feel like a could following me around. Still, in the back of my mind, Im wondering when or if it might hit me.

Staal might change his helmet to a new Bauer helmet for more protection. He has spoken to Brad Richards about his concussion from last season.

Yesterday Staal made these comments

Quote:
I havent had any bad days mixed in for a while, said Staal, who did not participate in contact drills the handful of days he skated in training camp. Im still trying to get into better shape and get my conditioning back to where it was, but Im getting closer, Im making progress.

Its fun for me to come to the rink. Its been a long time since Ive felt that way.

Staal Not Ruling Out Return for Winter Classic

He doesn't sound 100% confident it will happen but he's not ruling it out either: http://www.nyrangersblog.com/2011-ar...oncussion.html

Even if he's ready I don't see him coming back for the WC. Just too many extra uncontrollable variables to risk his first game back being an outdoor event. JMHO.

I think it would be very stupid to play him in that game. Even if he was ready to come back for it I would wait. Why put him in that postion

Wishful thinking, but I'm sure the team wouldn't even allow it...but it is great news that he is coming along so well (knock on wood!!)

Yeah, great to hear his optimism, but I ballpark that at around a 1% chance of going down. We've waited this long, and even though it's a big nationally televised game, it means the same in the standings as the next one. Don't rush it, we can wait. We'll have another one in NY in a few years that you can be a part of.

I don't care what anyone says, Staal is probably going to be bummed the hell out if he doesn't get to play in the Classic game. Come on, this is a once in a life time opportunity.

I'm not saying rush him, but you know he's probably crossing his fingers right now that he stays symptom free

Except its not a once in a lifetime opportunity. We'll get the winter classic next season and have home ice.

I'd rather have him 100% in the playoffs then 65% for an outdoor spectacle (a cool one at that).

It won't be next year but yeah we will have another one, it will be in NY and it will be a 10x bigger game for the Rangers. Wait till then.

Yea idk why people keep calling this a once in a lifetime oppurtunity. The pinstripe bowl deal runs out 2014, The NHL is waiting for the deal one of the most garbage bowl games to expire, the Yankees already said they want hockey there. Now thats ONCE IN A LIFETIME, an outdoor hockey game in Yankee Stadium, that would be worth the money. Not that crapshoot in philly. As for staaly, as much as I would love it, dont rush him at all. I want him cleared for contact at least 2 weeks before he plays.

25 Rangers on the ice. Not on obviously are Sauer and Eminger, both out a while. 15 forwards, 8 D, 2 goalies #NYR

It sounds as though Staal could very possibly be the first defenseman back out of the 3 we have injured.

While that is good for Marc I can't say the same for Sauer's "Day to day"

I want Staal to play in the WC, but at the same time I don't. It's the ****ing Flyers and it's a ramped up, high emotional, full of adrenaline game. Last thing we need is Staal to suffer from those idiots on the Flyers and get set-back ala Crosby

I don't want Staal anywhere near the Winter Classic. He hasn't even been cleared for contact, and we're less than 2 weeks away. That game is going to be nasty and physical, and there are a couple Flyers who are definitely not above trying to cheapshot a returning concussed player.

I personally want to see Staal playing contact hockey in our practices, getting hit for at least a month before making his season debut. The last thing I want is a Crosby scenario. Where we are in the standings right now, we have the luxury of letting Staal get completely healthy before putting him in the lineup. Even with our patchwork defense, we still have one of the best GA numbers in the league.
