He'd have to be released from his AHL SPC to sign an NHL deal. The team could theoretically refuse to release him from his contract if a different organization wanted to sign him to an NHL ELC, but I doubt that happens.
Okay, so he CAN'T just sign at any time because his current team has to let him go. Thanks.

Right. If the Rangers wanted to sign him, he'd obviously be released from his AHL SPC right away to sign his NHL ELC. Another team? Less certain.

Lee Baldwin called back up to The Whale. After scoring a coast to coast overtime winner yesterday against South Carolina. I'm guessing it's because of Bickel getting the call up.

Still out for at least another month with an ankle injury. The same injury that kept him out for half a season in Sweden a couple of years back.

Yep. With Erixon and Bickel both up, they needed a couple extra bodies (Baldwin being the other). Barring injury, I doubt Klassen sees a game.

V-Tank with the game winner last night with 16 seconds left. Bell had three assists. Wish I could have gone!

So that's one and a half to five weeks left? Or three to six weeks from this day?

It's three to six weeks, from the date the injury occurred (12/9/2011). So he's now a week to four weeks away, I guess you could say.

Considering his history, I'd say it's probably closer to a month.

Kinda rough on the Whale having to go without their first line (Hags, Mitchell, Zuke) and two of their better d-men. I guess they'll get Avery and Mitchell in a week or two, though. If Aves isn't playing against the debbies or fishsticks, he can't be close to the lineup.

I missed the last couple of games. How's the team looked?

Who sits instead? Rupp? Prust?

There are lots of "great" players in the AHL who can't make the jump full time.

He doesn't bring anything to the table that our other guys don't already, and he's just not that good. Mike Rupp is the best comparable, and Rupper is significantly better.

There's a reason he has only seen 65 NHL games by age 30--he's a "meh" player. Classic AAAA player.

If he is out 6 weeks,he should be back around january 20. He missed 20 games in his first season for Modo, when having the same inury.

just in time to be traded by the deadline. The team needs Zuke to come back and help CT but to also be a trade piece

Hagelin discussed the difference in systems between the Rangers and Whale

Quote:
“I didn’t play a lot of penalty kill in juniors, but then going into college (at Michigan) I started to play it, then obviously in Hartford,” Hagelin said of his time with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Connecticut Whale. “They like me to be a bit more aggressive here (with the Rangers). They want me to go for more pucks here than I did in Hartford, which I like.”

Hagelin said Tortorella and the Blueshirts coaching staff are encouraging Hagelin’s teammates to chip the puck ahead and allowing Hagelin to chase it down, instead of requiring him to retreat toward the puck to receive it.

“In Hartford it was, ‘Don’t be too far from the play,” Hagelin said. “But here it’s kind of the other way around, and I prefer that.”

Asked whether he had suggested that tactic to his coach, Hagelin laughed as if that were unheard of.

“Uh no, not really,” he said. “I’m still a rookie. Remember that.”

A Hartford Courant article on the Whale. Gernander and Daigneault do a good job developing/helping young players. Of course, some of the young players are really good hockey players. They haven't had much playoff success in CT but preparing players for the NHL is more important than winning in the AHL if you can't have both.

Quote:
It's a challenge for the head of any minor league operation, whether it's the manager in the Rock Cats' dugout or the coach behind the Whale's bench.

While focusing day after day on winning games, they're always aware of their primary function — preparing players for their parent club. So when the New York Rangers are hit with a rash of injuries, Whale coach Ken Gernander feels the pain.

Gernander and Daigneault have done a very good job down there. I never understood why some posters (who didn't even watch AHL games) were so critical of them.

JAM can't talk to another NHL team while under any contract without permission. This is not the NFL where teams sign players off other teams practice squad. The Rangers signed Devin Didiomete in 2008 to a NHL contract right before he was going to sign an AHL deal with Columbus. There was some question if the Rangers had tampered with Didiomete

Quote:
Talking to DiDiomete at the end of the prospects camp and before the Syracuse preseason opened, he was raring to come to the Crunch, no question about it. But a couple of days before he was expected to close out the AHL deal with Columbus, his agent said to sit tight.

In retrospect, it's obvious now that another team was interested in him, and was coming through with an NHL deal. That's much better for the player, three years of guaranteed money compared to one year in an AHL pact.

Problem is, teams aren't supposed to negotiate with players under contract to other organizations, even under tryout deals. The Rangers were at Traverse City, and saw DiDiomete. Did they jump the gun? Hope said nope, there was no improper contact.

But somehow, some team made its intentions known to DiDiomete's agent before the tryout deal was over. Anyways, Columbus was faced with the decision on whether to offer him an NHL deal as well, but it did not. Hope said Columbus let him out of the deal over the weekend, and the Rangers were there to pick him up.

So has anyone here seen JAM play? How has he looked?

I randomly stumbled onto his stats today, I was really surprised to see him doing so well. Not doubting his talent, but historically lots of undrafted guys who dominate the QMJHL as overagers usually have brief stints in the AHL/ECHL and then disappear.

Does it look like there is some potential there? Or has it been luck?
