Who does Callahan remind you of?

A couple of years ago (I think during the summer) there was a thread where folks were talking about trading either Callahan or Dubinsky - I think Neal was the primary guy we were talking about coming the other way. At that time, I think I said something like I'd do Dubi for Neal, although I considered it a bit of a lateral move, but of COURSE you'd trade Cally, because he was only a third liner (albeit a very good one) and if you can swap a third liner for a top 6, you always do it.

Mea culpa, I was wrong. I would still move Dubi (although again, I'd be looking for an upgrade rather than a lateral move), but Cally is obviously much more than a "good third liner". He is perhaps THE core player on this team outside of Hank - and likely a fixture in the top 6 and the captain for the next decade.

It's been in the back of my head that his game reminds me of someone for a while. When I was watching today, it suddenly struck me that it was... Brendan Shanahan. Obviously, he's smaller and is lacking the slapshot and therefore likely won't be able to have quite the impact that Shanny had in his prime - but other than that, do others see the parallel? Or am I wrong about him once again?

When he came into the league he reminded me of Shanahan.

Now, I would say he has his own territory. Players should draw comparisons to Callahan, not Cally to other players.

I concur 100%. Drury's lasting legacy will be the influence he had on Callahan and Dubi's games. Neither would be the player's they've grown to be without playing beside Dru, albeit on his last legs, especially #24.

Best. Callahan is actually pretty unique, and it's tough to fit him into any mold. I'm just going to continue enjoying him for what he is: an awesome player who I'll take on my team every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Callahan right now resembles Drury in many ways... Drury definitely had more of a scoring touch and a better shot though (while playing in COL/BUF).

He reminds me of a more physical version of Drury. He even scores a lot of his goals by standing in front of the net on the pp.

This might have actually made Drury's contract worth it. He turned Ryan Callahan into Cap'n Cally

Callahan was mentored by Drury, but Callahan is Callahan.

People should be comparing other players to Callahan, not the other way around now.

If I had to compare him to a player though, it'd be Gravy

He is the player I thought Ortmeyer was going to become.

The comparison to a young Drury is pretty accurate.

Surprised no one has drawn a comparison to Adam Graves. Tough, can score, led, hit, etc...

I don't see the Shanny comparissons.

Shanny was much more of a PF type of player when he came up his first few years.

His physicality level was much greater than that of Callahan today and was not nearly as fast as Callahan is today.

I agree with those here that see the Drury comparisson, just not as good offensivly.
