the only thing that needs to be said in this argument about Semin and Briere is playoff performance. Briere might be the best playoff performer in the league right now, which holds a hell of a lot more value than Semin's skillset that he only chooses to use sometimes. Let Brieres contract run out then we can worry about replacing him.

P.S. Semin plays like a *****, and I dont want a player named after ejaculate on my team.

Guys keep it to the post in question, not the poster. If you don't like what someone has to say, report it.

While I agree that Semin is a poor fit, both in terms of cap and organizational needs, I think his career numbers in the playoffs are better than you suggest--37 GP 12G 18A 30P. That's far from awful.

It's not an abominable idea, but Semin's skill set can be reasonably covered by what the Flyers have in-house, and they can focus on their tunnel-vision effort to sign a #1 dman for 14 years @ $6 mil per. Plus, I would be completely shocked if Semin agreed to a contract at an amount reasonable for the Flyers and their cap issues.

And I would be more than a little hesitant to sign a player who fights like Squidward.

Realistically: Semin will ask for somewhere around 6.5M a year, and there is no way we could afford him (even if we wanted to).

I doubt if any team will give that much to him. Especially after this season.

I disagree, out of 30 teams in the NHL someone will offer him around that much, and he will probably take it.

Changed your statement to reflect how I could see this playing out. I can't imagine any team here offering him significant dollars and definitely not over term, but I could easily see a KHL team making a big offer to have him come back to Russia.

I can't see any team here offering him more than perhaps 4.5M. I think he's worth about 3M, personally.

I really like Semin's skillset but he doesn't have the attitude and appears to have the Kovalev/Zherdev mentality of knowing hes so good and I don't need to put in the effort. If he had a heart like Giroux's he'd probably be close to Ovi and Crosby in terms of dominance on the ice but he's a self centered, money grubbing, asshat who will never change.

Eric "I have no back" Cole got 4.5 mil, Villie Leino got 4.5 mil, Semin can get 6.5

Coming off a 54-point season and following it up with another 50-point season (unless he really heats it up), I find it really hard to believe that Semin sees 6.5M in the NHL. While Semin is vastly more talented than Cole or Leino, he also comes with significant baggage associated with playing hard. Perhaps if he were still putting up 70-80 point seasons while coasting through stretches, I could see it.

If he gets more than 5M, I bet it's on a 1-year deal with a team hoping to get lucky.

I'll take Frodo over Semin any day of the week, Frodo lights it up in the post season and bringing Semin to Philly would be terrible for the chemistry and the yougens, sooooo no i'll pass thank you

The Flyers want character players who fit in with the new culture of the locker room. Semin doesn't fit the mold no matter his skill.

A very interesting point.

I agree with you that he probably isn't worth more than 4.5M. However, I disagree that NO NHL team will go over that.

I can see a team like Colorado/Nashville/Ottawa/Islanders/Dallas(after they've found a new owner)/Carolina who are all very close to the cap floor offering him 6-6.5M. Especially when you consider that the cap is likely to increase next year by as much as 6M dollars.

he is a selfish, soft piece of garbage. he doesnt play defense and he is highly overrated. I would rather spend whatever money he would command on a 2 way player or a solid defender.
As has been said already. he is Zherdev who will command more money.

Semin may not be the answer (and we dont need a Kovalev type if that's what he is) BUT I will say Flyers need an answer for the forward corps since:

Jagr will retire
Read and Talbot overperformed early this season and are not Top 6 material
Voracek is also not Top 6 material, tho Simmonds may be
There are question marks re JVR
Schenn and Couturier are still too young and need a few years to develop into real talent

SO who will Philly have left that are GUARANTEED star Top 6 material?

An ageing Briere, Giroux and Hartnell. A 'maybe' JVR and Simmonds.

That's not a Top 6. That's a Top 3.

Do you know what happens to one line teams in the POs?

Talbot is a fourth line PKer with the ability to fill in wherever necessary in times on injury. No one ever thought of him as anything more than that. He's awesome for what he is, but that's all.

And Read is a top NINE winger, not a top SIX winger. Top 6 on a good day? Yeah, but he's basically our Scottie Upshall; forechecks, brings a bit of sandpaper despite size, has tons of speed, enough skill to get by, and he's solid defensively. No problems there. Oh, he's also cheap.

Voracek >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Simmonds

Sorry. Voracek is a top 6 winger. Simmonds is a top 9 winger. Remember how I recently made that distinction? Simmonds could get better in years to come and cross into being a top 6 winger, but for now he's not. Voracek is.

Injury question marks? Yes.
Question marks about his ability to reach his potential down the road? No. I have no doubts about JVR's future within this organization and the kind of numbers he's going to put up. If you have doubts that's your own fault.

Couturier, if given more ice time in offensive roles, will surprise you. I contend that he's ready even if Laviolette is playing it safe.

Schenn needs healthy time on the roster. Dude is the most unlikely player I've seen in forever.

Voracek, JVR, Hartnell, Giroux, and Briere are already there. That's 5. Jagr makes 6.

Simmonds on the border.

Read can move around the lineup.

Couturier and Schenn are possibilities as well as soon as they get accustomed to the game.

Theoretically, if Schenn and Couturier are ready next year, assuming we don't re-sign Jagr we have 7.5 top 6 forwards plus Read (0.5 being Simmonds).

None of the qualities you listed are presently part of Scott Hartnell's game and he does just fine. Hopefully by the time Jagr is gone Schenn and Couturier are in a position to take bigger roles. Briere plays the RW with G.
