The price tag keeps going up, that's for sure. If he wanted to be a *****, he could ask for five to five and a half million per. My hope is that he settles for something in the mid to high four million range.

One thing: Shero better not keep waiting, because this is just like Malone . . . more playing time with Geno will only serve to drive the price tag up.

I'd like to see 3.75 for six years. But I'll be happy with anything south of 4.5 per.

I'd sign him right now when he has 21, rather than if he touches the big 50.

But if I was Neal, I wouldn't be signing anything until I end up with my final goal tally.

Wow, I hope you guys hoping for anything south of 4.5M are right. Maybe you can get him for that now. I'm not sure what happens to the price tag in another two months.

And 82 pts. A point per game player isn't going to sign for $4m a year. I'm hoping that he signs for less than what Jeff Carter got a few years ago ($5.2m per) if he doesn't slow down this year.

Right now you aren't signing him for anything south of $4.5M AFAIC, and Neal would be an idiot to sign a contract now because of his current performance. Either way Shero will find a way to get him signed. If worse comes to worse, then they can trade Martin to free up cap space.

6 may be a little high.

I'm guessing something in Bobby Ryan territory.

Anything south of 5M (like a 4 year, 19M deal) would be a gift, and the only chance (maybe) that happens is if it happens soon, where a cold streak still could cost Neal a few dollars and the risk of that might persuade him to take a little less.

That said, I say the Pens audio team might as well cue a cash register sound every time Kunitz-Malkin-Neal hits the ice.

Does that mean you'd keep Martin over Neal?

I said if worse comes to worse... I don't WANT to trade Martin, but he has become the most expendable defender given his cap hit, and what he brings to this team.

Consequently, hearing that Martin can never be traded for any reason whatsoever never gets old. Oh wait it has.

On HF it's impossible to ever be a shade of gray. You can only either be black or white, and never anything else.

If there is a choice between Martin or Neal (and obviously it's always a ton more complicated than that), I'd chose Neal 10 times out of 10. There is no question about it.

I just love how Paul Martin has become a non-starter here. Sid and Geno don't have two good wingers. The talent up front is so lacking that the 3C model isn't viable. Maybe not enough money for Neal. No biggie, because well still have Paul ******* Martin. I like the guy. I know you like the guy. BUT, some people here just don't appreciate that something has to give, and that something is either Martin or Sid, Geno, and Staal. Maybe I'm nuts, but I say you take care of Sid, Geno, and Staal, even if it means not having Martin.

Absolutely given our depth at defense. The guy I replied to made it sound like he'd keep Martin over Neal if it came to that.

In comparison to say Patrick Sharp who's putting up similar numbers with Chicago around $5 mill/yr seems fair.

Sharp is making 4.2 this season and his new contract will pay him 5.9 starting next season. Sharps been a consistent producer for a few years now so he's earned the 5.9 whereas this will be the first time Neal has surpassed the 30 goal mark.

Neals range should be around 5, give or take a few 100k.

As much as I think he's tremendously talented and deserves a nice fat contract, Neal GREATLY benefits form playing with Malkin. I really doubt he could replicate this numbers playing with lower tier center. 5 yrs. @ 4.5 - 4.75 is realistic and fair.

Unfortunately that argument holds no water in contract talks. The point is that he HAS produced those numbers doing it with the superstar center only helps his case since there hasn't been too many players that have proven they can play with Malkin.

Malone benefited from playing with Malkin. That didn't prevent a Tampa from coming along and overpaying for him.

The one saving grace is that Neal is a RFA. If it's a one or two year deal, I could see it being in that 4.5 - 4.75M range. If it's 5 years, I think you're talking the 5.0 - 5.25M range.

Last I checked Martin has a no movement clause as a part of his contract. The full details of his contract don't seem to be readily available, but assuming he would not agree to a trade that takes him off a stanley cup contender to where ever Shero tries to send him or atleast put up whatever resistance his contract allows him (the logical assumption), throwing around his name as often as it gets thrown around in these fantasy cap discussions seems to be a tad on the wishful thinking side.

Don't forget Neal is a RFA that should save us some money. I'd say worst case scenario Neal gets 5.5M (along with 50 goals type of season)
In any case, I can't see Shero giving him more than 6 years/35M contract.

When you think about it, that's kind of a blessing that Neal didn't produce statistically at all as a Pen last season.
They can use the "Malkin/Richards inflates your stats big time" argument to give him a bit less (even if he certainly wasn't as bad as the stats indicates)

I predict a cap hit around $4.5M, longer term (around 5-6 years). He fits this organization's needs to a T and what he brings is scarce on the current roster.
