Avangard and Jagr make the playoffs

It is official! Severstal allowed a goal to Metallurg with 2 minutes left and as the result is out of the playoffs. Barys and Avangard are in.

Damn. I was so hoping Avangard wouldn't make it, just to prove that money doesn't mean squat.

Two "expansion" teams - in the PO. That goes under "KHL success" in my notebook.

Doubt it would happen, but I'd love to see a CSKA vs Spartak series.

Space Race for the first Gagarin Cup! (playoffs thread)

The KHL playoffs will start today. On eurohockey you can find a little preview of every series: http://www.eurohockey.net/news/story...to_start_today

In the first match, Salavat won Avangard 3-2 in the OT, with the game winner coming after a big error by Avangard's goalie Fomichev. Antipov, Vladimir Vorobiev and Kuteikin scored for Salavat, Svitov and Vlasenkov for Avangard. Jagr has been pretty much invisible in this game, except for a crossbar he hit late in the third with Omsk busy in the tying goal hunt.

So how does Gargarin Cup work? Is it made every year or does a team get all their players/managements named carved in like SC and passed around each year like SC?

A country would go bankrupt if you had to make this

every year

Or blind.

That looks a lot like something my great grandmother had in her house before she got put in a nursing home...

Alessandro, read you interview with Stewart on eurohockey, thanks! The part about scouting is interesting, while the part about the KHL is thin. He clearly does not know any more than an average NA fan, he "heard stories", and so on. It probably makes sense to ask more "meaty" scouting questions of a guy like that...

Well, the boundary between lavish and gaudy is blurry Alternatively, one mans trash .... I personally find the SC cup ugly, although the GC is clearly overworked.

Thats what I suspected. Looked way to expensive to be made every year.

Hockey is the only sport where the trophy is never re-made.

Nah, there are plenty of sports where the trophy doesn't get remade.

Looks like there were quite a few surprises/upsets in the first few games.
Nice to the see the two Germans getting the first win with Spartak as well.

Bad game by Dinamo Riga, and especially Prusek. Let in a couple of weak goals, and then ****ed up completely and directed a shot from the center (that was going wide) in to his own net. Atrocious.

And Weinhandl has looked like an amazing player in the playoffs so far.

That goal was scored by Alexander Korolyuk, not by Mozyakin. Easy proof - jersey number

Avangard now tied with Salavat 1-1 with a huge shootout victory.

3rd string goalie Tsaregorodtsev with the shutout.
